5.4 Program of Study

Students in the Master of applied literary arts program shall be required to complete a minimum of either:

Research Project Option: fifteen credit hours of course work, a major project and report (ALA 6501), and an internship (ALA 6500) supervised by the faculty supervising their major research project. Course work includes two required core courses (ALA 6100 and 6101), and three elective courses.

Thesis Option: fifteen credit hours of course work, a thesis (12 credit hours), and an internship (ALA 6500) supervised by the faculty supervising their thesis. Course work includes two core courses (ALA 6100 and 6101) and three elective courses.

English elective courses will be offered once in a three-year period and elective courses offered by faculty in other disciplines will be offered more regularly.

The Major Research Project or Thesis will be supervised by one of the professors in English or a professor in a cognate discipline in most cases teaching a course or courses in the Master of Applied Literary Arts. In some cases, the student will also work with a community partner. This must be completed in the last term of study but shall commence at the beginning of the program of study.
