Wendy Graham
Professor MD FCFP FRRMSFamily Medicine
Dr. Graham is a Family Physician who joined the Discipline of Family Medicine as Assistant Professor in 2000. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012 and to Professor in 2024. She is a proud Memorial graduate having completed both her MD in 1997 and Family Medicine Residency in 1999. Her main research interest is in research skills development for rural and remote doctors. 6for6 is a faculty development program that teaches research and writing skills. Dr. Graham is Co-Lead and Co-PI. The program is designed to help participants overcome barriers to research. To date 44 participants have been trained and they are doing research that matters to communities. 6for6 fosters communities of practice and exemplifies Memorial’s social accountability mandate.
Dr. Graham serves on the FoM Faculty Development Committee and the Continuing Professional Development Leads committee. She is the Discipline of Family Medicine’s Faculty Development Co-Lead (Rural lead) and represents the Discipline at the Faculty Development Interest Group at CFPC. Her faculty development work complements the work of 6for6 and much of her leadership work in health policy. The curriculum of 6for6 has been expanded into two graduate courses: MED 6150 - Principles of Scholarly Writing for Rural Doctors, and MED 6151 - Principles of Scholarly Research for Rural Doctors.
Her rural practice setting has very much influenced her philosophy on teaching and learning. She has received numerous honours and awards for her teaching and leadership. These include a CFMS Champion/Cultural Changers Award, several awards for the Community Preceptor of the Year, several Awards of Excellence from the CFPC, Newfoundland and Labrador Family Physician of the Year and the Government of Canada’s Senate 150th Medal.
Dr. Graham has shown leadership in various medical organizations and spent most of her career engaged in health policy leadership. She has been the President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association, founding Co-Chair of the Family Practice Renewal Committee and President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of the College of Family Physicians. She was a founding member/board member of the Long Range Family Practice Network. These leadership roles highlight embracing opportunity and achieving excellence by weaving scholarship in all we do as Family Physicians.
