Visiting Learners

Memorial University is currently accepting visiting elective applications for a limited number of clinical learning experiences. Eligibility is restricted to learners registered in the final or penultimate year of MD programs at Canadian Medical Schools.

All applications must be made via the AFMC Student Portal.

The next visiting electives application window will be open March 31, 2024 to April 27, 2024 to allow applications for a restricted number of 2-week and 4-week electives at a limited set of clinical sites beginning June 2024 through September 2024.

The subsequent visiting electives application window will be open April 28, 2024 to May 25, 2024 to allow applications for 2-week and 4-week electives beginning September 2024 through to April 2025.

Memorial University is NOT currently accepting visiting elective applications from learners at international medical schools.

In line with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (CPSNL) and Memorial University's Faculty of Medicine, Undergraduate Medical Education will not consider applications for:

*  visiting observerships

*  visiting core clinical rotations

*  visiting electives for medical graduates

(exceptions will be considered for unmatched learners registered in Canadian MD extension programs)

Successful submission of a visiting elective application does not guarantee an elective experience. Elective experiences will be offered based on the availability of preceptors and space at the time of the requested elective.

Following any elective offer from Memorial University, applicants will receive an acceptance package which outlines the required application for educational registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland & Labrador (CPSNL) including, among other requirements, a recent criminal records and vulnerable sector check from the applicant's jurisdiction, which may be subject to additional fees.

In the absence of approved educational registration with the CPSNL, visiting learners will NOT be permitted patient contact and will not be eligible to receive academic credit for the experience.
