What is Accreditation?

Undergraduate accreditation is used to demonstrate that our undergraduate medical program meets accepted standards for educational quality. In Canada, a school receives accreditation from the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS).

Supporting our vision - Through excellence, we will integrate education, research and social accountability to advance the health of the people and communities we serve - is our work to ensure our undergraduate medical education program continues to meet national standards for educational quality.

The process of accreditation ensures we are delivering high quality, dynamic and innovative academic programming to our learners while enabling our faculty to be exceptional teachers.

Why accreditation is important?

CACMS accreditation provides assurances to medical students, graduates, the medical profession, healthcare institutions, health authorities, regulatory authorities and the public that:

  1. Educational programs culminating in the award of the MD degree meet reasonable, generally-accepted, and appropriate national standards for educational quality; and
  2. Graduates of such programs have a complete and valid educational experience sufficient to prepare them for the next stage of their training.

"Accreditation ensures that Canadian medical faculties' MD Programs meet the quality expected when producing tomorrow's doctors." - CACMS
