We are leaders in rural medical education and have received national and international awards and recognition. As the only medical school in Newfoundland and Labrador, research that focuses on the need of our communities is a priority. Ground-breaking research has provided important medical discoveries, which have led to improved medical interventions and patient care.

Dean's Notes

On August 14, 2016, I began my role as the Dean of Medicine at Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine. It has been an honour and privilege to serve as the sixth dean of medicine and first woman dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

Spring is in the air and with the winter semester for our graduate learners now finished, we are looking forward to celebrating our learners who have completed their programs and those who will continue their studies here at Memorial.

It feels as though this has been a rather long winter weather-wise, with multiple snow storms in Atlantic Canada, even though the winter seemed delayed initially. I hope you have been able to stay safe during the stormier days as we get close to spring-like temperatures.

A recent federal investment will allow Memorial to acquire high-tech research equipment and create a unique facility to study chronic diseases affecting Canadians.

Dr. Shyamchand Mayengbam and Dr. Kapil Tahlan, Facult of Science, and Dr. Guangju Zhai, Division of BioMedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, received $459,701 for the project, Multidisciplinary Systems Metabolomics Research Laboratory.

Cutting-edge robotics to facilitate and measure recovery from neurological disease conditions, such as stroke.

That’s the groundbreaking research graduate student Michael Babalola is leading in Memorial’s Faculty of Medicine.

Memorial’s research is expanding and accelerating in a big way thanks to a significant investment from the Government of Canada.

More than $11.5 million was announced on Aug. 29 for state-of-the-art research infrastructure and leading-edge studies focused on global issues.
