Newfoundland and Labrador Health Research Fund (NLHRF)

The Newfoundland and Labrador Health Research Fund (NLHRF) is an annual fund provided by Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and administered by the Faculty of Medicine that aims to build a comprehensive multi-disciplinary health research ecosystem in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The 2025 NLHRF competition will feature up to 7 Innovation grants and 5 Trainee fellowships as described below.

Deadlines
The Registration deadline for Innovation Grants will be: August 8th, 2025
The Application deadline for both the Innovation and Trainee competitions will be: September 19th, 2025

The 2025 NLHRF competition will include the following awards:

Innovation Grants

  • Up to six Innovation Grants will be awarded.
  • Each grant will be for a total amount of up to $100,000.
    • one year of funding with a one-year automatic extension to the authority to use funds
  • In addition to these six awards, a seventh award will be offered to the top-ranked application in the competition and will be distinguished by raising the total amount of the grant to $150,000. 
    • One year of funding with a one-year automatic extension to the authority to use funds
  • Application package will consist of the following:
    • NLHRF Cover page
    • 5-page proposal (references do not count towards this page max)
    • 1-page budget and budget justification
    • letters of support (if needed)
    • 5-page biosketch Curriculum Vitae

Trainee Fellowships

  • Up to five trainee fellowships will be awarded to full-time trainees
    • Currently enrolled or with a start date of Sept. 2025
  • Each top-up award is valued at $20,000
    • $20k awarded; $10k dispersed per year for 2 years
  • There will be three streams for consideration
    • Graduate students
    • Medical Residents
    • Post-Doctoral Fellows
  • Applicants from all Faculties/Schools with a research project focused on “health” are eligible
  • Application package will consist of the following:
    • NLHRF Cover page
    • 3-page proposal (references do not count towards this limit)
    • Copy of transcript(s) (unofficial is acceptable)
    • Academic reference (past or current supervisor to speak to research accomplishments and/or potential)
    • 5-page maximum Curriculum Vitae (biosketch format or similar)
