Principle

Overview

Throughout a residency program, residents play an important role in undergraduate medical education (UGME) as they teach medical learners at the bedside, in rounds, and in the classroom. As a result, it is imperative residents receive feedback on their teaching performance to ensure they are providing effective learning experiences. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) General Standards of Accreditation-Standard B6 states, in part, that resident’s “teaching abilities must be assessed in multiple settings, including written student assessments”.

Similarly, the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) Element 8.5 states, in part, that medical schools must have “formal processes in place to collect and consider medical student evaluations of their required learning experiences, teachers, and other relevant aspects of the medical education program.”

Purpose

To outline the requirements for the evaluation of resident teaching by undergraduate medical learners.

Scope

Any postgraduate learner enrolled in a postgraduate training program at Memorial University (Memorial).
