Principle

Overview

Throughout their residency program, residents teach undergraduate medical students and colleagues in various environments - at the bedside, in rounds, and in the classroom. Residents play an important role in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education; therefore, it is imperative they receive the training and teaching opportunities necessary to ensure their competence as teachers.

Implementation of a program to help residents develop their teaching skills fulfills, in part, the scholar and communicator roles of the CanMEDS/CanMEDS-FM physician competency framework which is required for accreditation as indicated in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) General Standards of Accreditation.

The Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS)-Element 9.1 also states that medical schools must provide “resources to enhance and improve residents’ teaching and assessment skills, with central monitoring of their participation in those opportunities provided.” Adhering to both undergraduate and postgraduate accreditation standards, the Faculty of Medicine (FoM) created a Teaching Effectiveness Program (TEP) to enhance the teaching administered by residents at Memorial University.

Purpose

To outline the policy and procedures established to facilitate a resident’s successful completion of the TEP.

Scope

Learners in Postgraduate Year (PGY) 1 and PGY 2 of a residency program at Memorial University (Memorial).
