Apply for a Study Permit
A study permit is a required document issued by IRCC that most international students need to study at Memorial University. Students should follow the steps found on the IRCC's Study Permit website to verify if a study permit is needed. If you are unsure, please email gcimmigration@mun.ca.
International Minors
If you are below the age of 17, you will need a custodian in order to apply for a study permit. Students who are above the age of 17 may not need a custodian; however, you may be asked to have a custodian by IRCC. Read carefully the information found on this website. If you need assistance finding a custodian, email gcimmigration@mun.ca.
Eligibility
International students who need a study permit must be eligible and admissible for a study permit. Some eligibility requirements are:

have a final acceptance for MUN

some students may be able to apply for a study permit with a conditional acceptance (IEP students)

show proof you have sufficient funds to study in Canada
-
be in good health (some students may be required to get a medical exam)

have no criminal record
-
proof that you will leave Canada once your finish your studies
Mandatory Documents
Incomplete applications can lead to rejection. You must include all documents found in the study permit application and any documents requested by the Visa Application Centre. Some important documents are:

Letter of acceptance

Provincial Attestation Letter (check here if you are exempt from this requirement)

Proof of financial support such as bank statements, employment letters, sponsorship letter, scholarship letters, among other. All financial support must have a reliable source such as an employment letter. It is also recommended having a funding cover letter. Check our Proof of Funding Cover Letter template. Applications that don't have strong supporting documentation may be rejected.

A Study plan or letter of explanation in which you indicate all the reasons you want to study in Canada. Check our guidelines to write a strong study plan. It is recommended that this plan is no longer than two pages long. For feedback, email gcimmigration@mun.ca

Bringing your family?
Spouses of some international students may apply for a Spousal Open Work Permit. You can find the eligibility requirement on this website. If your spouse is not eligible, they may apply for a visitor visa. You may also be able to bring your children with you while you study. If your children are above the age of 5, they may apply for a study permit. It is important to acknowledge that your family members also need to be eligible and admissible to come to Canada.
