In Memoriam

James G. Greenlee, Professor Emeritus, B.A. (Hons.)  (University of Waterloo/McMaster University); MA, Ph.D. (McMaster University)

James Grant Christopher Greenlee retired at the end of August 2007, closing a chapter – but not the book – in a career given equally to teaching, scholarly research, and service to his colleagues. During his thirty years at Grenfell, published books, served on a host of committees, provided leadership as Head of not one but two divisions, designed and served as academic midwife to the very successful Historical Studies programme, and taught countless numbers of students. His determination to encourage our students, combined with his devotion to the memory of his late wife led to his creation and continuing sponsorship of the Joanne Swan Greenlee Prize in Historical Studies. In 2005 he was awarded the Grenfell College Teaching Award – who can forget the enthusiastic and spontaneous standing ovation by the graduands when the award was officially presented to him at Convocation that year? In short, Jim’s thirty years at Grenfell mark not only a long period of dedicated service, they also stand as an outstanding example to us all of what “dedicated service” truly means. Jim passed on 9 June 2026.
