Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland is located in traditional Mi'kmaw territory. There are more than 300 Indigenous students on campus. Grenfell Campus understands Indigenous as having First Nations, Inuit, or Métis ancestry. Programs and services for Indigenous students include the Grenfell Campus Student Union Indigenous Caucus, an Indigenous Student Lounge, the Indigenous Resource Centre, a variety of events such as an annual powwow and the annual Indigenous Peoples Week, designated seats programs, housing agreements for Nunatsiavut beneficiaries, and culturally safe spaces for students to practice smudging and Kullik/Qulliq lighting. Doorways provides rapid access to mental health and addictions counselling services ‘one session at a time’. Walk-in counselling services are available without an appointment or referral. If further counselling is required, staff will work with you to provide access to additional services and supports. Please note Doorways provides services to individuals aged 12 years and older as well as couples and families. For more information click here. Please note, Doorways is not an emergency service. In an emergency, call 911 or the Mental Health Crisis Line at 811, or proceed to the nearest emergency department.

Ferriss Hodgett Library in partnership with CPS has purchased a number of self-help books on a variety of topics, including wellness and mindfulness. These books are located in the Wellness Collection in BW224, and can be checked-out from Health Services Reception and/or the library.
During the hours of 4:00pm until midnight if you present at Western Memorial Regional Hospital’s emergency department with a mental health emergency, you can request to speak with the Mental Health Liaison nurse rather than going through the usual emergency triage protocols.
Provides assessment and therapeutic counselling to individuals of all ages in the areas of mental health and addiction. For services for adults (aged 18+) please call 634-4506 and for children/youth (up to age 19) 634-4171.
Open to anyone who is struggling with addiction to or a dependence on drugs or alcohol. Talk to others who have been where you are, in a safe environment. Located at 112 Premier Drive, Corner Brook.

Safe Works Access Program (SWAP) is the needle distribution service offered by the AIDS Committee of Newfoundland and Labrador (ACNL). It is a health promotion and education service for people who use drugs. They offer a MOBILE ONLY service on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00-10:00pm in the Corner Brook area. Their services include providing clean supplies, disposal of used equipment, support and referrals. If you live outside of Corner Brook we can make arrangements to send supplies to you at another time. Call 634-SWAP to request a delivery or pick up.

GuardMe Student Support Program (GMSSP) is a free mental health service available any time of the day or night by calling:

GMSSP provides students with free real-time and/or appointment-based support in 60+ languages for any school, health or general life concern. The service is completely confidential within the limits of the law, which means that no one – including your family, friends or professors – will ever know that you used the service unless you choose to tell them.

- practical issues while studying
- relationships with friends and family
- language and cultural barriers
- stress, sadness and loneliness
- balancing work and school
- difficulty adjusting to life in Canada
Ways to Connect
- Mobile App - Download the My SSP app (through the Apple App Store or Google Play) to connect with a counsellor anytime by chat or telephone. Also, access resources on health, living away, relationships and student life. Access to on-demand fitness and mental health assessment tools is also available.

- Web - Students who do not have access to a smartphone or tablet, can access chat support and self-help resources on the website.
Service Eligibility
This free service program is available 24/7 to all full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at Memorial University who have paid their student fees.
Service Delivery Outside of North America
Students outside of North America can access the Chat feature while using data or Wi-Fi. If you are experiencing difficulties accessing the chat feature, check your data/internet connection. Some countries may have additional firewall protections in place that block certain apps. If this is the case, consider calling 001-416-380-6578 for services.
There are three options for calling GMSSP outside of Canada or the United States:
- Make an international call from your phone. You can always ask the intake coordinator to call you back so that you do not incur international charges.
- Call collect or make a reverse-charge call. Follow the specific calling instructions in your country. All international calls are live-answered call so we can accept any related charges.
- Call using an internet/Wi-Fi connection from a device that enables this feature.
E-versions of the books as well as select handouts are available through Grenfell Campus’ library’s course resources (e-reserves) by searching for Jennifer Broadbent or Veronica Hutchings as course instructor.
Grenfellmindfulness.com is a free 4-week program designed by Grenfell Campus’ Dr. Michael Newton with input from CPS’s psychologist Dr. Veronica Hutchings to teach mindfulness skills. You can access the course at: grenfellmindfulness.com

The SARA line is a 24/7 call/text line for residents within Corner Brook and surrounding area who are 16+ and have been impacted by sexual violence.
