Excess Leave Carry-Over Extension

The end date for the reduction of leave to a one-year carry-over limit has been extended from March 31, 2025 to Oct. 31, 2025.

2023 Tax Slips

Tax slips for Memorial employees, and pensioners who signed up to receive their tax information electronically, are now available online. Instructions on how to access your information in my.mun.ca, is available by clicking on Accessing T4s.

Pensioners who have not signed up to receive their tax information electronically will receive their T4As by mail to the home address they have on file with Human Resources (these tax slips will be posted by Feb. 29).

Johnson Insurance has informed Memorial University’s payroll team that payroll deduction will no longer be available as a payment option for policyholders as of their 2024 home and/or auto insurance policy renewal date.

General Economic Increases and OPEB changes

At a meeting held on Dec. 2, 2021, Memorial’s Board of Regents approved general economic increases for non-unionized employees who are paid on the non-bargaining, management and professional, and leadership pay scales. These increases are in alignment with the public sector template and unionized groups at Memorial.

Community of Practice event - Indigenous Inclusion 2.0

During the fall, the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion and Indigenous Works will be hosting a Community of Practice event titled Indigenous Inclusion 2.0. This event will take participants through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations related to the workplace, share locally relevant issues around Indigenous inclusion and provide examples of ways employers can work toward meaningful reconciliation. This event, conducted via Zoom, will be offered on a number of dates between Oct. 5 and Nov. 4.

Vaccination declaration deadline Sept. 7

As a part of our shared responsibility to keep each other and our extended families safe during the upcoming school year, COVID-19 vaccines are required for all students, faculty and staff. As a reminder, first doses of the vaccine are required by Sept. 7 and second doses are required by Oct. 15, 2021. Memorial has launched the secure vaccine declaration form. Please take a few moments to complete this form at your earliest convenience and no later than the end-of-day Sept. 7. You can access this form directly in the My MUN portal.

Memorial observing National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Sept. 30

In June, the federal government passed legislation to mark Thursday, Sept. 30, as a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. To observe this day of reflection, Memorial University will be closed; classes will be cancelled and university employees who are normally entitled to provincial and federal holidays will receive this day off.

LTD Deductions Resuming

The Department of Human Resources wishes to advise that the LTD premium holiday that began on April 22, 2021, will be coming to an end on Aug. 12, 2021. The last pay period for which no LTD deductions will be taken will be July 29, 2021. 

Notice of Change to Interest Crediting Rate on Member Contributions to the Memorial University Pension Plan

In accordance with a recommendation of the University Pensions Committee and approval by the Board of Regents, the interest rate credited to contributions under the Memorial University Pension Plan has changed from a net fund rate of return to a market rate based upon five-year personal fixed term chartered bank deposit rates. Memorial was recently notified of ministerial approval to implement the interest rate change which is effective July 1, 2020, as per Directive 2020-2 which can be found here. The interest rate used for 2020 will be a blended rate of 8.6 per cent and for 2021 onwards the rate will be market-based. For 2021, the interest rate is 1.1 per cent.

Johnson Insurance 2021 Scholarship Program

Johnson Insurance is pleased to offer 50 scholarships worth $1,000 each to eligible students completing high school in 2021 and starting post-secondary education in the fall of 2021.

Qualifying children or grandchildren of employees and retirees are eligible to apply and it is not necessary to be insured with Johnson for Home or Auto Insurance to make application. Deadline to apply is July 15, 2021.

Payroll Giving

Throughout the year, as part of Memorial’s overall annual fundraising program, a number of university employees and pensioners donate every payday through payroll deduction. Payroll gifts can support a broad range of designations across Memorial at the donors’ discretion, and can also support the Campus Food Bank (which is a separate charitable entity). In 2020, 278 people availed of payroll deduction to support one of these causes.

Celebrating the holiday season

As outlined in Newsline on Dec. 2, 2020, large holiday gatherings on campus are not permitted this year, and in-person employee gatherings at off-campus locations are being discouraged. Even though broad university events are not going ahead, virtual celebrations led by individual units are encouraged. Such virtual celebrations could replace the events that would have taken place throughout the season, including any events that units would normally have planned for Christmas Eve.

Information regarding severance payout

On Dec. 18, 2019, non-union employees at Memorial received notice of a Board of Regents resolution concerning changes to severance and other post-employment benefits (OPEB) for non-bargaining, management and professional, and senior administrative management employees. Notice was given that severance accrual would cease effective Dec. 31, 2021, and severance accrued to that date would be paid to eligible employees over the following 12 months. Within the above mentioned groups, only employees hired before Oct. 1, 2004, accrue severance.

Eligible employees may, at their option, request an earlier payout of severance prior to Jan. 1, 2022.  For detailed information, please click here.

Flu shot clinics

Public sector compensation disclosure

As per the Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act, the provincial government will publish an annual list of total compensation information for employees of public bodies making greater than $100,000 annually. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year the date of publishing the list was changed from “before July 1, 2020” to “before Dec. 1, 2020”.

An email will be sent to all employees on or before Aug. 28, 2020, regarding details of the salary disclosure.

The Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion will host the Busting Myths webinar on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 2:30 p.m.  The webinar will challenge the myth of meritocracy and discuss how organizations can reflect on their own practices to support hiring based on merit, through a diversity and inclusion lens. The Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion will host a Cultural Competence webinar on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 2:30 p.m. This webinar introduces the concept of cultural competence and provides strategies to help participants increase their self-awareness and awareness of other cultures. The Retirement Planning Seminar this year will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016. Employees at any stage in their career who are interested in learning more about retirement planning are invited to attend.  Registration is required.

Reminder: important tax information

Starting with the 2015 tax year, the Department of Human Resources will no longer be distributing T4 and T4A forms using Memorial’s internal mail system. With this change, these tax forms will only be available either on-line or, if an individual has not provided consent to receive electronic tax forms, they will be mailed via Canada Post to the person’s address that is on file in Employee Self Service for T4s.

Workplace Mindfulness

Feeling stressed?  Need help dealing with difficult situations? You are not alone. To help people deal with these types of issues, the Department of Human Resources recently piloted the Workplace Mindfulness Program.
