Degree Works
Degree Works is an online academic advising and program audit tool designed to help students and academic advisors track academic progress — easily see program requirements, completed courses and any courses required to be completed before graduation.
Students can access Degree Works through Student Self-Service or by using the button below:
Academic advisors can access Degree Works through the button below. Don't have access as an advisor? Email registrar@mun.ca.
Using Degree Works
Degree Works is a component of Memorial's student information system.
When accessing Degree Works, the first block of information will display Student ID, Name and program information (degree, major, faculty/school), as well as level of study (undergraduate, graduate), classification (year of study), academic standing and for graduate students only, their supervisor.

Students should ensure this information is accurate. If there is a discrepancy in the profile information, contact the appropriate office depending on the level of study to have it corrected/updated.
Degree Works should be used alongside the University Calendar when reviewing a program audit. Program requirements are based on University Calendar regulations from 2020-21 onwards. Should there be any discrepancy, the Calendar will be considered correct.
Students following the program requirements from an academic year before 2020-21 can request a manual program audit. These students can also email registrar@mun.ca to determine if the applicable year of their major/minor can be updated to requirements in a more recent University Calendar.
Program of study requirements
Program requirements are grouped into "blocks" of information, with each requirement having its own block. Some programs will have just one or two blocks, while other programs may have multiple blocks. Core degree requirements, for example, are often in their own block while major and/or minor requirements are in another block.

Once a student graduates, their program(s) will no longer be listed in Degree Works. Details from a completed program may be accessibly through a historical audit.
A maximum of two programs can be displayed in Degree Works at once. Information is available below on running an audit for students enrolled in more than two programs.
Second degree requirements (undergraduate level)
Completion of a second undergraduate degree requires a minimum of 30 credit hours beyond those used for a first degree (also called a residency requirement). Degree Works does not determine if students have met this requirement for a second degree. It's a student's own responsibility to monitor if they are meeting this requirement for a second degree.
Viewing more than two programs
For students enrolled in a third program, the third program will not appear on the primary dashboard. To view the progress for a third program, use the What-If feature within Degree Works. This tool generates a requirement audit for any program not currently listed as a primary or secondary goal.
Navigating Degree Works
Information in Degree Works is updated from our student information system nightly. We recommend clicking the Process and then Refresh buttons to ensure the audit information is the most up-to-date. Some changes may not be reflected until the next day.
A legend at the bottom of the page explains the different icons that appear throughout the audit.

In Degree Works, the @ symbol acts as a wildcard. For example, ENGL 2@ would mean any English course beginning with the number 2 can be used. While a @@ means any subject area and any course number.
Repeated courses will display an (R) to the right of the course. The most recent successful completion of a course will be used for program requirements and will be displayed in the appropriate block. Previous attempts at a course will be displayed in the insufficient block.
Running a What-If Analysis
The What-If Analysis is a feature that allows students and advisors to see how completed and in-progress courses apply to different scenarios. This is particularly useful when considering changing a major, applying to a competitive major, adding a minor, or—as noted above—if a student is currently completing a third program that does not appear on the primary dashboard. To run a What-If Analysis, follow these steps:
- Select the What-If tab located under personal information block.
- Use the dropdown menus to select the specific scenario to view:
- Catalog Year: Select a year from 2020-2021 or later to ensure the audit displays correctly. Future catalogs will not be available until June of that year. For example the 2026-2027 catalog will not be available until June 2026.
- Degree: Select a degree (e.g., Bachelor of Arts).
- Major/Concentration/Minor: Add the specific areas of study. If certain options are greyed out, it means they cannot be selected for the selected degree.
- Future Courses (Optional): Add Planned courses to see how specific classes taken in the future will fulfill remaining requirements. Note: It is at the discretion of the academic unit when courses are offered.
- Click the Process button to generate the temporary audit.
Running a What-If Analysis does not constitute admission to a program or change a student's program/major/minor. Students must declare/apply to any program they intend to complete. Entry to certain programs are competitive and/or selective.

Common scenarios in Degree Works
Placement of courses within the audit
Degree Works is a dynamic software that uses a best-fit approach. As more courses are completed, Degree Works may move courses around in an effort to help best meet the program requirements.
If a course is not displaying in the expected location, students are advised to contact an academic advisor or the appropriate office depending on the level of study.
Good to know: Degree Works does not differentiate courses within the same letter grade. If a program requires one 2000-level course and two courses with final grades of 65% and 78% have been completed, where both courses are within the range of a B letter grade, Degree Works will treat them both the same and may not necessarily select the higher grade for the audit.
Averages and GPAs
Degree Works only provides the Grade Point Average (GPA). If a minimum average is required, as a graduation requirement, it will be calculated once the student has applied to graduate. Students can calculate their own average using the information provided in the Grades, Averages and GPA section of our website.
Requirement blocks are showing as "met," but courses are still missing
This normally occurs in the elective block for our flexible degrees (e.g. Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science).
In some instances, a course may be used to meet more than one requirement of a program. In this situation, Degree Works may use a credit hour range to determine how many electives are needed for each major/minor combination. This range does not reduce the minimum credit hours required for a program requirement.
It is recommended that students seek academic advice for clarification.
Transfer credits
If students have been awarded applicable transfer credit, but the relevant requirement is showing as "not met" it could mean the transfer has not been finalized.
Transfer credits are normally reflected in Degree Works a day after they appear on a student's academic record. If transfer credits are displayed on the academic record (within Student Self-Service) but not displayed in Degree Works, contact the approrpriate office depending on the level of study.
Waivers and course substitutions
If students have been granted a waiver or course substitution it will need to added/keyed to their program audit. Once added, it will always appear for the current program. If a student changes their program of study or the Calendar regulations they are following, the waiver/substitution will need to be keyed to the new audit.
If a requirement is showing as "not met" it could mean the waiver/substitution has not been applied to the student record. Contact the approrpriate office depending on the level of study for further details.
