Conflicts, deferrals and exemptions

Conflicts

There are several types of conflicts: multiple exams at the same time, back to back exams, three or more final exams within 24 hours.

If you have multiple exams at the same time and/or back to back exams, you will be contacted by the Registrar's Office directly to set up an alternate schedule. If you are doing an online course, you will be notified by CITL. Email scheduling@mun.ca immediately if you make alternate arrangements with your instructor(s).

Multiple exams at the same time

While best efforts are made to minimize exam scheduling conflicts, sometimes you may have two courses for which the examination time is the same. In order to allow you to write both examinations with a minimum of inconvenience, the Registrar’s Office arranges for individual invigilation in quarantine for courses held on the St. John’s campus.

Back to back exams

Occasionally your exam schedule may present a back to back exam conflict or two exams without a break in between. For example, one exam scheduled between 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. and another from 12-2 p.m. on the same day. If your courses are held on St. John’s campus, the Registrar’s Office will provide invigilation in quarantine.

Quarantine exams
  • You will not be permitted to leave the examination room during the quarantine period without the permission of the invigilator. For this reason, lunches and books to study for your next exam will be allowed in the examination room.
  • Electronic devices (such as cell phones, laptops, iPods, etc.) are prohibited in the exam room. If you have any notes or reference materials on your laptop that you require for studying purposes for your exams, print them off before coming to the exam room.
Three or more final exams within 24 hours

If you are scheduled to write three final exams beginning and ending within a 24-hour period, you may write the three examinations as scheduled, or you may request in advance to write a deferred exam.

The second exam in the 24-hour period is the one which must be deferred. You must make a request for a deferred exam directly to the academic unit in question. Note that some academic units have forms and deadlines for submission of requests for deferred examinations.

Example of three exams in a 24-hour period:

Exam 1 – Dec. 4 from 12-2 p.m.
Exam 2 – Dec. 4 from 3-5 p.m.
Exam 3 – Dec. 5 from 9-11 a.m.

Example of three exams not in a 24-hour period:

Exam 1 – Dec. 4 from 12-2 p.m.
Exam 2 – Dec. 4 from 7-9 p.m.
Exam 3 – Dec. 5 from 12-2 p.m.

Deferrals and Exemptions

If you are prevented from writing a final examination due to illness, bereavement, or another acceptable cause, you may apply to have your exam deferred or your course graded based on the work completed.

If you wish to have your final examination deferred or request to be exempt, you should speak to the academic unit offering the course. The process for this request is outlined in the university Calendar.
