Canadian Armed Forces - Prior Learning Assessment

Memorial University was founded on a simple yet profound idea. We honour the past by promising a better future.

We are an institution built to memorialize those who served in the First World War, the Second World War and subsequent conflicts. We honour those who lost their lives by providing each new generation with the knowledge and abilities to live their lives to the fullest.

Memorial recognizes that learning may occur outside a formal institutional setting via professional or personal experience for current, former, regular or reserve Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel. Through a prior learning assessment and recognition process, Memorial is committed to supporting the academic journey of CAF personnel.

We also understand that CAF deployment can happen at anytime and as such Memorial will be flexible with financial and academic deadlines. If you have questions relating to tuition and/or fees, please email cashiers@mun.ca.

Where to start

Book an appointment by emailing registrar@mun.ca. We'll set you up with an advisor who can meet with you in-person or online to discuss your academic interests and plans.

In your email, use subject line "CAF Prior Learning Inquiry" so we can direct your email correctly.

Together with an advisor, you will review the existing academic programs offered by Memorial and discuss potential options based on your interests and qualifications/training. Our advisor will help you determine how to earn credit at Memorial and outline academic and non-academic supports that are offered by various units throughout Memorial University.

If you are only interested in taking one or more courses without being admitted to a credential program (degree, diploma or certificate) you can be considered for admission as a non-degree student.

How to earn credit

In order to receive credits we would need to review your formal and non-formal training completed through the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

Formal training

Formal training can consist of training completed through the Royal Military College of Canada or other training completed via the CAF at a post-secondary institution (university/college). In order to assess these training credentials we would require:

  • Official transcripts from the Royal Military College of Canada or other post-secondary institutions
  • Course outlines for any courses taken
  • Current Member Personnel Record Resume (MPRR)

We already have precedent set for course-based transfer credits from students who previously attended Royal Military College of Canada.

Informal training

Informal training would consist of other military training and/or life experiences. We would complete a prior learning assessment and would require a written summary of the training/experience/learning for which you are looking to receive recognition/credit. This summary should include examples of how your experiences meet the learning objectives of the course/program you are seeking at Memorial University.

Evidence of learning can also be achieved through the following:

  • challenge for credit exam
  • A portfolio of your learning
  • An interview with a qualified faculty member (e.g. for language learning)
  • Other supporting documentation:
    • Certificates of completion
    • Transcripts
    • Course outlines
    • Letter of support or references
    • Performance reviews
    • Work samples/projects completed
