Admissions

Admission to Grenfell’s Theatre program is competitive but welcoming. You’ll need to meet Memorial University’s general admission requirements — and then show us your passion for theatre through an audition (Acting stream) or an interview (Technical Theatre Production stream).

Once you’ve applied to Memorial, we’ll contact you to arrange your audition or interview. We’ll work with you to set a time and send you the link.

Do you want to speak to someone?

We’re here to help! Email the Theatre Department gctheatre@mun.ca if you’re thinking of applying. We’d be happy to arrange a call or video chat to tell you more about the program and help you explore whether it’s the right fit for you.

Step 1. Apply to Memorial University

  • Complete the general application for admission or readmission.
    - When you apply, indicate whether you want to be considered for the Acting stream or the Technical Theatre Production stream.
    - Submit a short personal statement telling us:
      • Why you want to study theatre at Grenfell
      • Why this stream interests you
      • Any theatre experience you’ve had (acting at school, backstage, technical training, or even volunteering at festivals or front-of-house)
      • What skills, strengths, or perspectives you will bring as a student in the program
      • What your interests are — for example, do you enjoy cosplay, multiplayer games, woodworking, metalwork, costume design, or building and creating things?

Deadlines

February 1 → applications can be considered for  priority acceptance
March 31 → deadline for Fall semester
April 1  → Late applications may be considered if space allows.

Step 2. Prepare for your audition or interview

Acting stream → prepare a monologue (up to 3 minutes) from a contemporary play.
Technical Theatre Production stream → be ready to talk about your skills, interests, and theatre experience.
Tip: If you’re applying for the Technical Theatre Production stream, let us know about any relevant skills — such as sound or video editing, woodworking, electronics, costume making, cosplay, or stagecraft.

After your Memorial application is approved, we’ll reach out to schedule your audition/interview and send you a link if it’s online.

Special Admissions Process

We know that not every creative path follows the same route.
If you have the passion, drive, and talent for theatre but don’t quite meet the university general admission requirements, you can still apply to the Theatre BFA through a new special admissions process. This pilot program is all about recognizing and nurturing students with genuine creative drive and dedication, wherever their journey began. So if you haven’t taken a required subject like a laboratory science or mathematics at high school you can still join the Theatre program.
