A fitting way to remember a remarkable student
A new award that honours the life of an exceptional student was recently awarded at Grenfell Campus’s Scholarship reception.
Amanda Thomas Saunders, a Grenfell psychology student, navigated complex health circumstances while completing her bachelor of science, majoring in psychology. She underwent a heart transplant and during her recovery was diagnosed with blood cancer. Despite it all, she returned to Memorial University to complete a second degree—a bachelor of social work. During this time, she had to undergo dialysis for further health issues. Sadly, Amanda passed away in September 2024 at the age of 27.
Those who knew Amanda were in awe of her positive attitude and her tenacity, and the way she approached every obstacle with gratitude, optimism and humour.
A group of Grenfell psychology faculty members wanted to honour her characteristics of persistence and determination in academic achievement and spear-headed this award. Donations were received from her family, friends, and classmates.
The Amanda Thomas Saunders Perseverance Award recognizes a Grenfell student who demonstrates perseverance while completing their degree. The inaugural award was presented to Maria Loke.
An award in Amanda’s name was also established in the School of Social Work. The Amanda Thomas Saunders Perseverance Award in Social Work was established by Amanda’s parents Sandra Thomas and Terry Saunders, and their friends and family.
