New interim dean named for School of Arts and Social Science
Aug. 12, 2025
Following a call for expressions of interest, consultation with an advisory group, and candidate interviews, Dr. Julie Pitcher Giles has been recommended to be the interim dean of the School of Arts and Social Science. President Jennifer Lokash has approved the recommendation.
Dr. Pitcher Giles will be in the dean’s office on August 18, 2025, continuing until August 14, 2026 or until a permanent dean is recruited, whichever comes first.
Dr. Pitcher Giles is an assistant professor, chair of the Business Program, and a long serving faculty member. Her research interests relate to strategy and socially responsible engagement of businesses, particularly among small businesses, and often in the context of rural communities. She says that many small businesses are often so deeply embedded and engaged in their communities, that every action they take is both strategic and responsible, but from a unique perspective that may not be driven by "the bottom line". Her research explores the nature, benefits, and costs of this type of business engagement.
“She brings many years of experience in university teaching, leadership, service, research and engagement,” said Dr. Ken Jacobsen, vice-president, Grenfell Campus. “Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Julie.
“I would like to thank Dr. Peter Ride for stepping in over the last few months. I also want to acknowledge the late Dr. Sandra Wright, who previously served in this role and is greatly missed.”
