Registration Priority Policy
In principle, priority for registration is determined by three factors:
- Students' program of study (i.e. degree, major, minor)
- Closeness to graduation (i.e. number of credits completed*)
- Students' academic achievement (i.e. GPA*)
Academic units may allocate spaces in course sections for students in a particular program of study, based upon students' declared degree, major and/or minor.
Students are classified into one of the following categories and their priority in registration is determined by the rules for that category as described below:
New Memorial University students with early offers of scholarships:
For Fall registration, new Memorial University students with early offers of scholarships will register first.
For Winter registration, new Memorial University students who received early offers of scholarship (interim admission average of 90% or higher) and those receiving an entrance scholarship (final admission average of 85% or higher) will register first.
For both Fall and Winter registration, within the group, students are ranked based on surname, alternating each semester between starting with those whose surnames begin with "A" and those whose surnames begin with "M."
Other new Memorial University students:
For their first semester and contiguous second semester these students register second. Within the group, students are ranked based on surname, alternating each semester between starting with surnames that begin with "A" and starting with surnames that begin with "M."
Current and returning Memorial students:
These students register next and students within this category are divided into two groups: the first group comprising students who have accumulated 90 or more credit hours and the second group comprising those who have accumulated fewer than 90 credit hours. Within each of these two groups, the students are ranked by a registration grade point average (GPA), which is defined as the better of either the GPA based on the last 30 attempted credit hours, or the cumulative GPA.*
College Transfer Year (CTY) students from the College of the North Atlantic (CNA):
These students register with the same priority as those in category three, however, in determining the registration GPA, the grades in the courses completed in the College Transfer Year are included. The assignment of points to a grade is done applying Memorial's grade point scale. In accordance with Memorial's policy on transfer of credit, grades are not assigned for the transferred courses, but are included for calculation of registration GPA only.
Other Transfer students:
For their first and contiguous second semester at Memorial, these students will be permitted to register at the mid-point of the time for the two registration groups as defined in category three (i.e. either in the group with 90+ credit hours or in the group with fewer than 90 credit hours).
Transfer students with a degree from another institution or with 90+ credit hours of transfer credit are included in the 90+ credit-hour group and all others are included with the fewer than 90 credit-hour group. Beyond the second contiguous semester the priority for these students will be determined by registration GPA, as defined for category 3.
* In determining total earned credit hours and the registration GPA, the following will be included:
For Fall Semester registration, work completed up to and including the previous Winter Semester.
For Winter Semester registration, work completed up to and including the previous Spring Semester.
For Spring Semester registration, work completed up to and including the previous Fall Semester.
