Clinical Skills Leave Limits

Clinical Skills attendance is mandatory. As outlined in the general Leave Request section, a leave request must be submitted to the UGME office for any missed or likely to be missed Clinical Skills session and is subject to approval by the Phase Lead. 

In circumstances beyond the control of the student (e.g. death of a close relative, medical emergency or urgency), with the leave request duly authenticated and approved by the phase lead and discussed with a clinical skills team representative, an alternate arrangement or assignment may be made when possible.

Even with approved leave, learners who miss more Clinical Skills sessions than those outlined below cannot receive a passing grade for the course:

Phase 1:

  • 2 communications sessions

Phase 2:

  • 4 sessions in total
  • One session in any of the following subject areas:
    • Respiratory
    • Cardiovascular
    • Gastrointestinal
    • Musculoskeletal

Phase 3:

  • 4 sessions in total
  • One session in any of the following subject areas:
    • Internal medicine
    • Pediatrics
    • Psychiatry
    • Head and Neck
    • Neurology
    • Rheumatology

No absences will be permitted for the following sessions:

    • Death and Dying
    • Giving Bad News
    • Trauma and Survivorship
