Holidays
Official holidays for medical students are limited to the statutory holidays recognized by Memorial University of Newfoundland and the PAIRN Collective Agreement. Currently, these include:
 

Good Friday

Victoria Day

Memorial Day (July 1)

Labour Day
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Thanksgiving

Remembrance Day

Christmas

New Year’s Day

 

Unless on call, students are entitled to the holidays outlined above. Regardless of the Holiday, call duty and designated shift work must be fulfilled. On-call duties or shift work cannot start on a Holiday, but the end of on-call duties or shift work can fall on a Holiday.
 

Breaks and Vacation
Core Clerks (students enrolled in MED 8710, Core Experiences)

  • Year-end holiday break* (not less than one week at the end of the calendar year)
Post-Core Clerks

 

Designated breaks:
  • Year-end holiday break*
  • CaRMS Interview Period: February 28 - March 20 2022**
Vacation:
  • A leave request form is required for each vacation. Discuss your vacation time with the Clerkship Academic Program Assistant if it deviates from the below recommendations.
  • Vacation must be taken in one (1) week blocks. 
  • Students must take four (4) weeks of vacation during academic year four (4).
  • At least one (1) week of vacation must be taken between the end of the 8710: Core Experiences course and before the start of the calendar year-end break. This will not apply for the Class of 2022.
  • At least one (1) week of vacation must be taken between the end of the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) interview period and before the start of the 8720: Advanced Procedural Competencies course. This will not apply for the Class of 2022.
  • Requirements for reassessment or remediation may affect required vacation time.
  • Deviations must be approved by the Phase 4 Lead.

**If you must travel for CaRMS interviews on the Friday before the interview period, you are excused from duty. See the section on Leave Requests for details regarding CaRMS Travel.
