Karl M. Wells Scholarship in LGBTQ2S+ Studies

About the Award

The Karl M. Wells Scholarship in LGBTQ2S+ Studies was created through the generosity of Memorial University of Newfoundland alumnus, Karl Maxwell Wells. Karl is an award-winning veteran journalist, author, actor, and producer. His career spans five decades and includes television, radio, and print media. Karl finds great satisfaction in elevating others and has done so throughout his career and philanthropic endeavors.


Who is Eligible?

This scholarship will be awarded to a full­time student in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences pursuing academic work in LGBTQ2S+ studies, or who is actively involved in LGBTQ2S+ matters, or who has a demonstrated commitment, either through previous academic endeavors or through community involvement, to the advancement of knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ2S+ lives, history, and issues.

This may include contributions to human rights issues and policy development that positively affect LGBTQ2S+ people. This scholarship will be rotated annually between undergraduate and graduate students. When awarded to an undergraduate student, preference will be given to those who have completed at least one year of study.  If there are no eligible undergraduate candidates in a given year the Scholarship may be awarded to a graduate student, and vice-versa.


Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must have scholarship standing. Eligible applicants will be assessed on both their academic achievement, and the quality and impact of their work (whether academic or community involvement) in advancing understanding of, and contributions to, LGBTQ2S+ communities.


Application Requirements

Applications must include:

  1. A one-page cover letter outlining suitability for the award in relation to the award criteria.
  2. A résumé that includes any relevant community experience or achievements.
  3. An up-to-date transcript.
  4. A letter of recommendation from either an academic source or appropriate communitybased referee (e.g. volunteer supervisor).
  5. This 2023 Karl M. Wells Scholarship in LGBTQ2S Studies application form.

Value of Award

$2,000.00 (The scholarship may be awarded to the same student a maximum of two times provided that the student is the top candidate for the scholarship in a given year).
