MUN PhD Student Recognized Internationally for Groundbreaking Research
Lee Britton, a PhD student in the NRPOP Laboratory at Memorial University, is making an international impact with his research on environmental emergency response.
Recently, Lee presented his doctoral work at the Arctic Council’s Preparedness and Response Conference in Bodø, Norway. There, he shared his research with a consortium of circumpolar governments, academics, and nonprofit organizations focused on advancing cold climate emergency preparedness and response efforts.
Lee also showcased his work at InterSpill 2025 in London, a leading international event for oil spill prevention and response. His research focuses on how oil binds to beach sediments during spills, leading to the formation of contaminated zones. At InterSpill, he presented a manual he co-authored on the detection and delineation of sunken oil, a key component of his ongoing doctoral studies.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Lee was awarded the prestigious "Emerging Leader" Award at InterSpill 2025.
The NRPOP Laboratory and Memorial University proudly congratulate Lee on these incredible achievements and his dedication to advancing environmental protection and emergency response in cold climates.
