FAQ for Prospective Research Students
We encourage you to review the following commonly asked questions and their answers.
- I am interested in a master’s level of research-based program at Memorial’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Should I apply to a Master of Engineering (MEng) or a Master of Applied Science (MASc) degree program?
At Memorial, MEng is research-based while MASc is course-based.
- What MEng degree programs do Memorial offer?
Process Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Oil and Gas Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and last but not least, Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering. Please review each program descriptions at https://www.mun.ca/engineering/graduate/programs/
- How do I gain admission to a MEng or a PhD degree program
Admission is conditional on acceptance of a faculty member as supervisor. We recommend that prospective students identify and reach out to potential supervisors to express interest in joining their research
- How do I find a research supervisor? What do I do if faculty members do not respond to me?
You can review the tips for contacting and securing a research supervisor at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWtQsJwiin4 and our faculty researcher profiles at: https://www.mun.ca/engineering/research/about-us/researcher-profiles/. Faculty members are often busy with many commitments; they may not and are not obliged to respond to everyone. It may be in your best interest to follow up or contact more/other faculty members in your area of interest.
- Am I required to have a supervisor identified before I apply?
It is not necessary, but it is advisable. Faculty members who are recruiting new graduate students would have access to applicant files. Your application would still be reviewed and considered by faculty members who may be interested in supervising. But ultimately a faculty member would have to eventually come forward and agree to supervise you for you to be admitted to a research program.
- What are the admission requirements for international students? Can I provide you with my documents for an eligibility pre-assessment?
We would encourage you to submit a formal application so your qualifications can be fairly assessed, should you wish to be considered for a research program. We do not provide one-on-one pre-assessment for MEng and PhD applications.
- I have many questions about the application process, the required application documents, etc. What do I do?
Please review the detailed instructions and information provided at: https://www.mun.ca/become/graduate/apply-to-memorial/
- Can I apply if I don’t have all required documentation ready?
Yes. However, it’s an applicant’s responsibility to ensure all required documentation are uploaded at the earliest possible time. It is at the discretion of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science to either consider incomplete applications or reject them due to missing documents.
- What is the application deadline for MEng and PhD programs? When will a decision be made?
Application deadline is December 1st for the Fall intake semester of the following year. Decisions on MEng and PhD applications are normally made within 2-3 months after an application deadline has passed. However, if a faculty member agrees to supervise you, you can be admitted at any point to any intake semester (Fall, Spring or Winter) – please contact tteo@mun.ca about it.
- Can I submit a MEng or PhD application any time after the application deadline of December 1st?
You may, however late applications will be considered where resources and time allow. It is at the discretion of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science to either consider late applications or defer them for consideration of the next Fall intake semester. We are unable to guarantee or imply at a given point if and when your late application will be considered, so please always apply before or by the application deadline.
- Can I submit an application for the Spring or Winter intake semester?
You can as our portal remains open for all programs and all semesters throughout the year. However, your application will be deferred for consideration of the next Fall intake semester, unless you have already secured a supervisor. In that case, you should contact tteo@mun.ca about it so you can be admitted.
- Do you offer application fee waiver? Can my application fee be refunded?
No.
- Can I apply to the MEng or PhD degree if my previous education was in a different field?
Yes, you can, but only if your background is relevant. We, however, do not guarantee or imply admission should you choose to apply.
- Do you accept Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter as proof of English proficiency for admission to a MEng or PhD program?
Please review the list of acceptable proof of English proficiency at https://www.mun.ca/become/graduate/apply-to-memorial/
- What kind of appraisal letters should I provide?
Two academic references are required to be considered for a MEng or PhD degree program.
- I am currently a student registered in an undergraduate engineering degree at Memorial. Do you offer a fast-track option?
Yes. You are eligible to apply for admission to the MEng fast track option. Please contact tteo@mun.ca about it.
- Do you offer funding or scholarships to MEng or PhD students? How do I obtain it?
