Dr. Carlos Bazan received his PhD in computational science from San Diego State University and Claremont Graduate University in San Diego, California. Also from San Diego State University, he received an M.Sc. in business administration, finance. Dr. Bazan also holds an M.Sc. in numerical methods from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain; and an MBA and B.Sc. in engineering from the Catholic University of Asuncion in Asuncion Paraguay.
Before moving to Canada, Dr. Bazan was an adjunct professor of computational science at San Diego State University and a research scientist at the Rees-Stealy Research Foundation Laboratory. As part of his appointment, he managed several research and academic projects and coordinated the Computational Science Research Center’s Visualization Laboratory, the Professional Science Master’s (PSM) program, and the Applied Computational Science and Engineering Student Support (ACSESS) program. The PSM program operates in partnership with industry and is designed to allow students to pursue advanced training in science and mathematics, while simultaneously developing workplace skills highly valued by employers. The ACSESS program is designed to build strong partnership with local businesses and become a significant computational science consulting resource. His teaching assignment included several graduate courses such as engineering economy, mathematical modeling, computational imaging and organizational development.
Outside of academia, Dr. Bazan has extensive C-level management experience in both the for-profit and nonprofit business worlds. He worked for Pangea Foundation as Chief Financial Officer and Member of the Board of Directors for several years. Pangea is the leader in Nonprofit Visual Intelligence® and helps bring the scalable, enterprise-class software that drives the innovation of the world’s mega-corporations to over 2000 nonprofit organizations of all sizes. During his tenure as Pangea’s CFO, he helped transform the organization’s business model from grant-based to subscription-based enterprise (SaaS). Dr. Bazan also spent many years as a serial entrepreneur and working for energy companies such as TEXACO and Solpar/Grupo Beta as both member of the board of directors and as chief financial officer.

Dr. Bazan's research interests include the area of technology innovation and commercialization. More specifically, how to turn scientific research outcomes into successful businesses, e.g., via translational research. Translation research has emerged as a new means to transform basic research findings into practical applications that enhance the quality of life. It was originally conceived for the medical world—translational medicine—in response to concerns over the long time lag between scientific discoveries and their incorporation into health treatments, practices and policies. In essence, translational research helps turn an early-stage innovation into a new product, typically advancing the development of the innovation to the point where it becomes attractive for others—such as angel investors, venture capital firms, or industry—to embrace the challenge of manufacturing the product for the market.
Dr. Bazan is currently working on an interdisciplinary research project (Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and Faculty of Science) to develop sensing systems for water quality assessment. The first phase of this project was funded by ACOA-AIF, RDC, PRNL & MUN and has successfully concluded on December 31, 2016. The second phase of the project is funded by ACOA-AIF, RDC & MUN and will start on April 1, 2017. The vision of this two-phase project is to provide portable, selective and sensitive solutions for the characterization of water contaminants of concern. In alignment with this vision, the goals of the second phase of the project are: 1) to translate the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) -based platform technology developed by the Bottaro Group at Memorial University from technology readiness (TRL) 6 to TRL 9 (ready for market); 2) to develop a strategy for a start-up company that will spin-off from Memorial University and commercialize the project’s outcomes in the form of laboratory services for water quality assessment; and 3) to design a translational research methodology and framework for other innovations created at Memorial University.
