Hugh Carter Miller was a pioneer in establishing the pharmacy profession in the Newfoundland and Labrador. This new scholarship endowment was created by generous gifts from the family of Hugh Carter Miller. The scholarship will be awarded a student entering the School of Pharmacy with excellence academics. The first recipient will be selected for the Fall of 2022.

I recently received a parchment from Memorial University that marked 11.5 years of post-secondary education . . . so far. During Memorial’s February in absentia convocation, I was granted the first doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) degree to be awarded by the School of Pharmacy. It was a proud moment for me.

Faculty member earns national award for article on e-cigarette legislation
Dr. Hai Nguyen ended 2020 on a research-related high.
His article, Association of Canada’s Provincial Bans on Electronic Cigarette Sales to Minors With Electronic Cigarette Use Among Youths was named article of the year by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in a December news release.

Dr. Hai Nguyen’s paper, “Association of Canada’s Provincial Bans on Electronic Cigarette Sales to Minors With E-cigarette Use Among Youths” has been published in the JAMA Pediatrics. Dr. Nguyen is a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Health Policy Evaluation and Health Care Sustainability.

School of Pharmacy offering first in-province injection training
To support pharmacists’ expanded scope of practice in the province, the School of Pharmacy has initiated an injection training program for pharmacy students and practicing pharmacists. Fifty-three students and pharmacists were trained to give injections in the second half of November.

A number of faculty members and alumni from the School of Pharmacy are involved in planning the 2014 Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP) Summer Educational Sessions, which will take place from August 9-12 at the Delta Hotel and Convention Centre. The event hasn’t been held in St. John’s since 2003.

Berries as brain insurance
More Canadians are affected by brain injuries than Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Cord Injury, HIV/AIDS and Breast Cancer combined, according to the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation.
But the answer to combating traumatic brain injury (TBI) – caused by a direct blow to the head (for example, a car accident, assault, fall, or sports injury) – may lie not in treatment, but prevention.

Members of the public are are encouraged to clear out their medicine cabinets and drop off their expired or unused medications for safe, confidential disposal at the School of Pharmacy’s Public Pill Drop on Saturday, Mar. 9, from 12-4 p.m. at the University Centre.
