Personal Profile

I received my bachelor's and master's degrees in environmental science and technology from Jilin University in China and my doctoral degree in environmental systems engineering from the University of Regina. I was then awarded a NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship and continued my research at Dalhousie University for two years. In March 2010, I joined the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland as an assistant professor. I received an early promotion (with tenure) to Associate Professor in May 2015.

My research mainly focuses on environmental engineering, especially associated with the development of environmental technologies for pollution control and sustainable development of natural resources in ocean and harsh environments. My research expertise and interests lie in the areas of offshore oil spill response, soil and groundwater remediation, marine oily wastewater treatment, reservoir souring control, solid waste composting, biological interactions affecting pollutant transport, and northern environmental studies. I enjoy conducting innovative research, collaborating with people and addressing practical engineering problems for industries, governments and communities. In the past 5 years, I have acted as PI or Co-PI in 21 research grants funded by organizations including Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Research & Development Corporation (RDC) of Newfoundland and Labrador, Petroleum Research Newfoundland and Labrador (PRNL), Suncor Energy Inc. (Suncor), the Harris Center, MITACS, and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). I have generated over 100 publications within 5 years.

I enjoy spending quality time with students and fostering their success. I have been teaching mainly in the areas of environmental engineering and management as well as environmental monitoring and analysis. I have been actively involved in several engineering associations and have provided professional services for governmental and non-governmental organizations. I have been serving the Executive Committee of Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) NL Section and as the Faculty/Student Advisor at Memorial University since 2011. I also serve as a Senior Expert of UNDP and the Atlantic Region Director of Canadian Association on Water Quality (CAWQ).
