BA professional: Carl Mercer, United Nations

Bachelor of Arts (BA) grads work in a wide variety of diverse careers – from non-profits to tech companies, and advertising to government – yet the myth of the BA as barista persists. To combat this fake news, we're bringing students real-life stories of BA grads, including where they are working and how they got there.
OUR NEXT EPISODE FEATURES CARL MERCER, SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS ADVISOR AND LEAD SPEECHWRITER IN THE OFFICE OF THE 76th SESSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY
In addition to his work in the Office of the President of the General Assembly, Carl spent seven years with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), where he focused on communications and advocacy around climate change, disaster risk reduction, sustainable energy, and other environmental issues.
Before his years of working in communications at United Nations, he was a student right here in Memorial’s Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, where he graduated with a degree in Political Science, before going on to earn his MA in International Relations, Conflict and Human Rights, from Utrecht University in the Netherlands.
Since graduating with his BA rom Memorial, Carl has worked for non-governmental organizations in Angola, Chad, Ethiopia, France, Indonesia, Liberia, South Sudan, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the United States.
