General admission requirements
Changes to admission average for 2020-21
Memorial’s Senate has waived the undergraduate general admission overall average requirement of 70 per cent for Newfoundland and Labrador high school students in the graduating class of 2020 who apply to attend Memorial University in the 2020-21 academic year (Fall 2020, Winter 2021, or Spring 2021). Applicants will need to have completed graduation requirements for high school as set down by the Department of Education and obtained passing credits in the subjects outlined above.
Admission requirements for competitive admission programs will be assessed by the faculties/schools in the context of the current situation.
Applicants who graduated from high school in Newfoundland and Labrador prior to 2020 and who are not registered in 3000-level high school courses in 2020 will be required to meet the admission requirements specified below.
Advice will be requested from the Department of Education for students who complete Level III courses in 2020 but apply to Memorial in a subsequent academic year.
To be eligible for general undergraduate admission, you will need to successfully complete at least 10 credits in senior level high school courses in the following five subject areas:
Subject Area | Eligible NL Courses | Eligible IB Courses |
---|---|---|
1. English | English 3201 | English (Standard or Higher Level) |
2. Mathematics | One of:
| One of the following at the Standard or Higher level:
|
3. Laboratory Science | One of:
| One of the following at the Standard or Higher level:
|
4. Social Studies or Modern/Classical Language (MCL) | One of:
| One of the following at the Standard or Higher level:
|
5. Elective | Two credits in any subject area at the 3000 level | Any subject area (Standard or Higher Level) |
An overall average of at least 70% is required in the 10 credits that are used to fulfil the subject area requirements listed above. If more than one course satisfies a subject area, the course with the highest grade is used to determine your admission average.
*Students who write the Math 3200 public examination are automatically assigned a grade for Math 3203 (Math Scholarship Score) on their high school transcripts. The Math 3203 score is derived from Math 3200 examination results and is assigned only once final exam results are released. It has no credit value. The higher of the Mathematics 3203 or Mathematics 3200 grade is used to calculate your final admission average. For further information about Mathematics 3203, please contact the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
Applicants who have completed certain International Baccalaureate (IB) or Advanced Placement (AP) courses may be eligible for transfer credit.
Admission to some programs is competitive for a limited number of spaces. A higher admission average and/or supplementary information may be required as part of the faculty-specific admissions.
