A campus of Memorial University, the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) is North America's most comprehensive marine institute dedicated to education, training, applied research, industrial response, and technology transfer supporting oceans industries. Operating under the MI’s School of Ocean Technology, the Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec) provides research and development support, industry outreach and scientific/technical advisory services to its clients and partners with expertise available in areas ranging from ocean observation and ocean mapping to remotely operated vehicles and the operation of autonomous surface and underwater technologies. The Centre is based at The Launch, MI’s ocean innovation centre and a major cornerstone facility for the Canadian oceans ecosystem, located approximately 35 mins from St. John’s in the Town of Holyrood, NL. This team works on the cutting edge of ocean technology in collaboration with a wide range of marine sectors locally, nationally and internationally to enhance the safety, efficiency, sustainability and profitability of maritime pursuits through the application of technology.
DUTIES
The successful applicant will work as a part of a team of engineers, researchers, and technologists that undertake collaborative research and development and industry outreach projects for a diverse client base that includes fisheries, aquaculture, marine environmental, energy, marine transportation and defense. Duties will include, providing technical support for the maintenance, deployment and operation of oceanographic instrumentation including hardware/firmware/software maintenance; troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing common problems with marine equipment, oceanographic buoys, sensors, cables, connectors, computers, and networks; ensuring that all sensors, instrumentation and equipment are calibrated and maintained to specification and schedule; transporting, cleaning, and storing equipment; reporting and undertaking any needed repairs to equipment; and performing other related duties as required.
This position will have the opportunity to contribute to a technical team responsible for the maintenance, deployment and operation of wide range of marine vehicles such as Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs), Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) as well as oceanographic instrumentation. An element of travel both within and outside Newfoundland and Labrador can be expected. There may also be a requirement for short at-sea trips on Marine Institute or client vessels. This position is based at The Launch in Holyrood, NL.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience (3-5 years) in the operation, installation, diagnostics and repair of electronic instrumentation and oceanographic equipment; graduation with a diploma or undergraduate degree in electronics systems, electronics engineering technology, marine electronics or related field. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. The successful applicant will be familiar with supporting the operation and maintenance of marine instrumentation (SBES, MBES, Side-scan sonar), data acquisition systems and power systems (battery packs, power management in AUVs/ROVs); Experience with oceanographic platforms (AUVs, ROVs, buoys, gliders) and the deployment and recovery of ocean systems in field environments is considered an asset; The successful applicant will possess strong documentation skills for maintaining logs, manuals and system specifications; Competency working in a marine environment, including small vessel operations (certifications are preferred but can be obtained through the Marine Institute) is considered an asset; Strong organizational, interpersonal and writing skills are required; possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license as issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador and the ability to work in the field and at-sea are also required.
SALARY: $58,722 to $76,259 per annum (Research and Technical Personnel IV, NAPE Local 7405)
