Dr. Brian Veitch received the President’s Award for Outstanding Graduate and Postgraduate Supervision for 2017, which recognizes exemplary efforts to foster success in the research and scholarship of graduate and postgraduate students to advance their success in the profession.

Dr. Veitch has been an ocean and naval architectural engineering professor at Memorial since 1998. Most of the work he does with his students is done in team settings and involves researchers from other universities and research institutions, industry and government. His students have come to know and depend on his unwavering support.

"As a PhD candidate under the supervision of Dr. Veitch, I have been the recipient of and witness to his commitment to the success of his graduate students,” said Doug Smith. “He is very supportive of his student's academic success and access to research funding, including scholarships. While his commitment to the financial and academic well-being of his students is outstanding in its own right, one of the more outstanding qualities of his supervision is his involvement in setting his students up for their future careers. He provides coaching on professional development and makes an effort to connect his students to key industry personnel, which has been especially beneficial to me."

Since joining Memorial, Dr. Veitch has supervised 64 graduate students, 44 full-time research staff and over 130 work term students.

Dr. Wei Qiu, department head of ocean and naval architectural engineering, says Dr. Veitch is very deserving of this award.

“Brian has made outstanding contributions to the training of graduate students,” said Dr. Qiu. “He provides exceptional supervision, feedback and inspiration to his students in a friendly, creative, open, critical and honest way. He always encourages his students to explore new ideas independently. Many graduate students have been highly successful in their careers.”

Dr. Veitch is humbled and grateful for the recognition. “My job entails working with bright, motivated people in a creative, pleasant atmosphere, he said. “I’m a lucky person. Being recognized for doing my job is humbling.”

In 2016, Dr. Veitch received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and Fellow of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.

The president’s awards recognize excellence in public engagement, teaching, research, service to Memorial and community service. The awards for 2017 were formally presented by Dr. Gary Kachanoski, president and vice-chancellor, Memorial University, at a special ceremony on the St. John’s campus on Dec. 13.
