General admission requirements
Credential
One of the following:
- General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) or
- International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE);
and one of the following:
- General Certificate of Education (GCE) or
- International Advanced Levels (IAL).
All credential documents must be awarded by one of the following UK awarding bodies: AQA, Cambridge, Eduqas, OCR, or Pearson Edexcel.
Required subject areas
- English
- Mathematics1
- Laboratory Science1,2 (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics)
- Social Studies or Modern/Classical Language1
- Elective
1Students who are missing an eligible course in one of subject groups 2, 3 or 4, who apply for admission to a program that does not require completion of these courses, will be considered for general admission. In this case, an eligible course in subject groups 1, 2, 3 or 4 may be used to substitute the missing course. Students who are missing eligible courses in two subject areas should contact admissions@mun.ca.
2Combined Science is not acceptable to meet the laboratory science requirement.
General admission criteria
Grade requirement
- Completion of the GCE including a minimum grade of C/4 in the required subject areas at the Ordinary (“O” or IGCSE) Level and at least three Advanced Subsidiary (“AS”) Level or two Advanced (“A”) Level subjects with a minimum grade of C.
- Exceptional candidates with grades of A*/9 in each of the required subject areas at the Ordinary (“O” or IGCSE) Level may be considered for general admission.
English language proficiency
- Proof of English language proficiency is normally not required.
- Applicants who have completed English as a Second Language as the course used to fulfill the English subject area requirement, or who have not completed their program fully in English, will be required to demonstrate English language proficiency through a standardized test.
Competitive program entry (if applicable)
- Admission to some programs is competitive for a limited number of spaces. A higher admission average and/or supplementary information may be required as part of the faculty-specific admissions.
Additional notes
Completion of AS or A Level subject examinations with minimum scores may qualify accepted applicants for course-based transfer credit.
General Paper may be considered as equivalent to IGCSE/O Level English, but cannot be used toward the AS/A Level requirement.
BTEC or Applied Advanced Level subjects are not an ideal preparation for admission. General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills and Key Skills subjects are not acceptable.

When you apply (early acceptance)
- Upload your GCSE/IGCSE certificate(s) and AS/A Level predicted grades or Provisional Results Slip to the admissions portal.
- Submit your official English proficiency test result (if required). See the general admission criteria section above.
- Supplementary information for competitive-entry programs may be required with your application.
When you complete your examinations (verified acceptance)
- Arrange for your official certificates to be submitted using the instructions provided below.
If you have completed A/AS Levels
All official GCSE/IGCSE and GCE/IAL Final Certificates or Statement of Results Certificates are required.
Cambridge
Certificates that can be verified through Cambridge* should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Other awarding bodies
Upload your certificates to the admissions portal. Note: these certificates will be considered unofficial, but may be sufficient for early acceptance.
Official certificates will be required for verified acceptance and should be submitted directly from the awarding body (e.g. AQA, Eduqas, OCR, Oxford AQA, Pearson, etc.) or the Ministry of Education via email, post, or courier.

- You are required to apply as a transfer student. In addition to the information provided above, please refer to our university or college transfer applicant requirements.
