English proficiency tests
English language proficiency for general admission may be demonstrated through an acceptable score on one of the following standardized tests. The test must be taken within two years prior to the application for admission and able to be verified with the testing provider. Final results should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Note: The Bachelor of Engineering program has additional English proficiency test score requirements.
Cambridge English Language Assessment
Requirement: A minimum score of 176 in C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency.
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment
Requirement: A minimum overall score of 60.
Duolingo English Test (DET)
Requirement: A minimum overall score of 115.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Requirement: A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS Academic or IELTS Academic for UKVI, with at least a band 6 in reading and writing. General Training results are not acceptable.
Michigan English Test (MET)
Requirement: A minimum score of 59 is required on the MET.
Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE ACADEMIC)
Requirement: A minimum overall score of 60.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Requirement: A minimum score of 4.5 overall on the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition, with a minimum of 4.0 in reading and writing. For valid tests completed up to January 2026: a minimum score of 83 overall and minimum of 20 in reading and writing.
Intensive English programs at Memorial
Applicants who do not meet the minimum scores outlined above may be considered for early acceptance if they enrol in the Memorial University's Intensive English Program or Intensive English Bridge Program, offered at Grenfell Campus.
