English proficiency tests
English language proficiency for general admission may be demonstrated through a valid score on one of the following standardized tests. Final results can be submitted based on details listed with each test.
Cambridge Assessment English
Requirement: A minimum score of 176 in C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency. Scores will be considered valid for two years from the date of examination.
Submission: Document must be sent directly from official testing authority to the Office of the Registrar.
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment
Requirement: Minimum band scores between 50 and 60 in each of the four skills tested (reading, writing, listening and speaking), with at least two band scores of 60.
Submission: Document must be sent directly from official testing authority to the Office of the Registrar.
Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees (CanTEST)
Requirement: Minimum band scores of 4.5 in the listening comprehension and reading comprehension sub-tests and a score of 4 in writing are required on the CanTest.
Submission: Document must be sent directly from official testing authority to the Office of the Registrar.
Duolingo English Test (DET) (until Spring 2025 only)
Requirement: A minimum score of 115.
Submission: Upon receipt of your certified test results, you should send the results from your Duolingo account to Memorial University of Newfoundland.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Requirement: A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS Academic with at least a band 6 in reading and writing. General training results are not acceptable.
Submission: Test Report Form can be uploaded to the admissions portal or e-mailed to admiss.docs@mun.ca.
Michigan English Test (MET)
Requirement: A minimum score of 59 is required on the MET.
Submission: Document must be sent directly from official testing authority to the Office of the Registrar by post or courier.
Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE ACADEMIC)
Requirement: A minimum score of 58 in each of the reading, writing, listening and speaking components of the PTE is required.
Submission: Score Report can be uploaded to the admissions portal or e-mailed to admiss.docs@mun.ca.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Requirement: A minimum score of 79 on the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition, with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing, and not less than 17 in listening and speaking.
Submission: The TOEFL destination code for Memorial University is 0885. Alternatively, the Score Report can be uploaded to the admissions portal or e-mailed to admiss.docs@mun.ca.
Applicants who do not meet the minimum scores outlined above may enrol in the Memorial University's English as a Second Language program at the Grenfell Campus.
