General Admission Requirements

Credential

One of the following:

  • General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) or
  • International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE);

and one of the following:

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) or
  • International Advanced Levels (IAL).

All credential documents must be awarded by one of the following UK awarding bodies: Cambridge, EdExcel, Pearson, AQA, or OCR.

 

Required Subject Areas

  1. English
  2. Mathematics*
  3. Laboratory Science* (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics)
  4. Social Studies or Modern/Classical Language
  5. Elective

*Students who are missing an eligible course in subject groups 2, 3 or 4, who apply for admission to a program that does not require completion of these courses, will be considered for general admission. In this case, an eligible course in subject groups 1, 2, 3 or 4 may be used to substitute the missing course. Students who are missing eligible courses in two subject areas should contact admissions@mun.ca.

 

General Admission Criteria

Grade requirement
  • Completion of the GCE including a minimum grade of C/4 in the required subject areas at the Ordinary (“O” or IGCSE) Level and at least three Advanced Subsidiary (“AS”) Level or two Advanced (“A”) Level subjects with a minimum grade of C. Exceptional candidates may be admitted based upon GCSE/IGCSE examination results.
English language proficiency
  • Proof of English language proficiency is normally not required.
  • Applicants who have completed English as a Second Language as the course used to fulfill the English subject area requirement will be required to demonstrate English language proficiency through a standardized test.
Competitive program entry (if applicable)
  • Admission to some programs is competitive for a limited number of spaces. A higher admission average and/or supplementary information may be required as part of the faculty-specific admissions.

 

Additional Notes

Completion of AS or A Level subject examinations with minimum scores may qualify accepted applicants for course-based transfer credit.

Applied Advanced Level subjects are not an ideal preparation for admission. General Paper, General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills and Key Skills subjects are not acceptable.

Students completing the BTEC Technical/Vocational stream may be considered for admission depending on the program of study. Email admissions@mun.ca for further information.

 

Supporting Documents Required

If you have not yet completed A/AS Levels

When you apply (early decision)
  • If A/AS level results are not yet available, a provisional decision may be possible with a certified copy of the final GCSE/IGCSE certificate and predicted grades for the A/AS levels or the Provisional Results Slip of the A/AS levels.
  • Official English proficiency test result (if required) sent directly from the testing authority. See general admission criteria above.
  • Supplementary information required for competitive-entry programs may be required with your application.
    • If you are applying for admission to nursing or fine arts, you should e-mail an unofficial copy of your transcript, showing mid-year grade/progress report (issued by your school in January/February) no later than March 1.
When you complete your A/AS levels (final decision)
  • Certified copies of all GCE/IAL Final Certificates or Statement of Results Certificates sent by post or courier to the Office of the Registrar. Certifying Statement of Results sent directly from the awarding body to Memorial will also be accepted.

 

If you have completed A/AS Levels

  • Certified copies of all GCSE/IGCSE and GCE/IAL Final Certificates or Statement of Results Certificates sent by post or courier to the Office of the Registrar. Certifying Statement of Results sent directly from the awarding body to Memorial will also be accepted.
