Graduates, families and friends and School of Pharmacy faculty and staff gathered for the graduation celebration and presentation of awards honouring the Class of 2012 on June 4 at the Capital Hotel.

“This evening is such a nice complement to convocation,” said Dr. Linda Hensman, Dean of the School of Pharmacy. “It’s an opportunity for everyone to get together in a more informal setting, where the class can really celebrate as a group and also share the friendships and memories of the last four years with their loved ones.”

The evening included the announcement of a number of student awards, as well as those named to the Dean’s list and the presentation of the School of Pharmacy Excellence in Teaching Award as voted on by students from the Class of 2012. Named to the Dean’s list were Stephen Coombs, Stephanie Davis, Sarai Hamodat and Stefan Rideout. The teaching award was extended to two faculty members, Dr. Lisa Bishop and Dr. Scott Edwards.

The graduating class followed the tradition of presenting their class tile to the School. Each year, the graduating class designs a ceiling tile that bears their names and year of graduation. These are permanently placed in Lecture Theatre I in the School of Pharmacy. The class also took the opportunity to announce the creation of the Class of 2012 Award, a donation of $200 a year for the next five years that will be awarded to a deserving student who contributes beyond academics to enhance student life at the School of Pharmacy. It will also recognize a student who may not have been a previous recipient of an award.

In her address to the class, Dr. Hensman reflected on their commitment and encouraged continued engagement both as volunteers and contributing members of the community.

“Professionalism, community, friendship and volunteerism. We have tried to instill these characteristics in you, because we have been preparing you for the profession and to be leaders. True leadership is built on virtues such as these,” she said. “I was proud to call you my students and tonight that pride is greater still, because I can now address you as colleagues.”
