Financing your education

Government student loans

Student Aid is designed to supplement other form of resources that a student may have. This program is not meant to cover all expenses. Both loans and grants are available to help you access and pay for post-secondary education. Grants are non-repayable, but loans have to be paid back. Repayment starts six months after you leave school. All student loans are interest free. With one application, StudentAidNL will assess you for both federal and provincial financial assistance.

For more information on student aid or to apply visit: www.gov.nl.ca/studentaid

Lines of credit

Many banks offer professional lines of credit for students. A line of credit gives you access to a specific amount of money that you can withdraw as you need it. Interest is paid only on the money you withdraw. Unlike government student loans, these lines of credit require you to start paying interest right away, so these payments need to be built into your budget.

Unless you're a mature student, banks will require a co-signer for your application. By co-signing, they are agreeing to be responsible for paying back the loan if you are unable to.

Tips:
  • Shop around.
  • Don't be shy. If you like one bank over another, but find a better offer at another bank, ask your preferred bank to match it.
  • Know what you are agreeing to. Ask questions to ensure you understand exactly what they are giving you and when you are expected to make payments.
Financial Fair
