New Graduate Students - MASc.

Welcome to your graduate studies in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science!

1. Please review information for new graduate students

2. Attend one of the following orientation sessions for graduate students in engineering:

  • The schedule and link for the orientation will be emailed to you.

3. Check-in process

  • Email your program of study form to Gerard Murphy at
  • If you are an international student, email us a copy of your study permit, student visa, or a letter of invitation (LOI), which confirms the approval of your visa application. You may not have the Program of Study Form if you are given a conditional admission.
  • If you are given a conditional admission letter, please email the documents specified in the letter to and request an unconditional offer.

4. Registration online

Principles for course selection

  • You shall register for the required courses with a number less than 9000 prior to any graduate (9000 level) courses if any are listed on your Program of Study Form. These are the undergraduate courses that are required to enhance your background.
  • You shall register for core courses first. Any graduate course will be offered only once a year. If you miss the core course, you will not be able to take it until it is offered again in 12 months.
  • The normal work load is 3 courses per semester. If you need to undertake a Project A course with 0 credit, you could register another three courses in the same semester.

Below is an example of the study plan for MASc. program in Environmental Systems Engineering and Management program:

2 core courses2 core courses1 core course

5. LabNet account - If you need access to LabNet, please go to: Follow the instructions on the page. This will set up the LabNet account and sync the passwords with your account.

6. Other things you need to know

  • Fees - You can find the fee charges in “Financial Information” on “Self-Service”. Fee Payment Deadline is the first day of class. Fees may be paid online through self-service, or telephone banking.
  • Program Termination Policy - The passing mark for each course you register for, including undergraduate and graduate level courses, is 65%. Any grade lower than 65% will be considered as a failure. Your program may be terminated if there are two failures for MOGE or MESEM programs or three failures for MASc. One failure in Graduate Diploma program will result in a program termination. NOTE: This policy is waived until further notice due to the covid-19 pandemic.
  • Update your mailing address - All mail from School of Graduate Studies, Registrar’s Office, Cashier’s Office, etc. will be sent to your address on self-service. Please update your current/local mailing address immediately by using the student self-service.
  • Check MUN email - Once the MUN email is set up on your account, please make sure to check this email daily, as all messages from the University will be sent to this MUN email, not your personal email.
  • Lab safety training - Register SC1807 (CRN 84966) lab safety training & SC1808 (CRN 91125) WHMIS training, if you will have any lab work as part of the courses. Once complete, please submit the grade to our office by email.

Note: P.Eng. licensure in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador is governed by the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL). A degree from a graduate program in engineering does not ensure eligibility for a P.Eng. license. An applicant must hold an undergraduate engineering degree from a Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board-accredited undergraduate program or possess equivalent academic qualifications. Please check the PEGNL website at or contact PEGNL by email at
