Information for Guidance Counsellors

We know that as a guidance counsellor, you are one of many guides that high school students rely on to help them navigate the big leap to post-secondary life.

Whether they are looking for the vibrant energy of our St. John’s campus, the close-knit community at Grenfell Campus, the specialized marine programs at the Marine Institute, or the unique northern experience at our Labrador Campus — you can help them find where they belong.

To make your job a little easier, we’ve gathered everything you need to know about Memorial University in one place to assit you in helping your students become the next Memorial alumn.

Explore our programs

Whether your students have their academic plans all mapped out or they are still exploring their interests, Memorial University offers the flexibility to help them find the path that is right for them. With 100+ program options across four of our campuses (St. John’s, Marine Institute, Grenfell, and Labrador), there is a campus and a program for every kind of interest and student.

Not sure what to study?

That's okay! Students can select Unsure Program/Not Specified on the application allowing them to explore different subjects before declaring a major or applying to a competitive program.

Check the deadlines, admission requirements and apply

For most programs, we recommend applying by our priority deadlines to ensure students are considered for early admission and entrance scholarships:

  • March 1 - fall (September) semester
  • Oct. 1 - winter (January) semester
  • Feb. 1 - spring (May) semester

Pro Tip: Some of our programs have specific application deadlines.

Check the requirements

All students must meet general admission requirements before being considered for admission to a competitive-entry program. The admission requirements will vary depending on your student's category of admission. We recommend reviewing the admission requirements before starting an application.

Applying online

Applying is easy through the online application protal. To submit their application, students will need to pay a one-time, non-refundable fee:

  • $70 CAD: Canadian citizens and permanent residents
  • $300 CAD: International applicants

Accepted Payment: Payments are made via Visa or MasterCard directly through the application portal.
Good to know: debit and pre-paid credit cards are not currently accepted for the application fee.

If you are helping guide a student through the application process we recommend that you use the student's personal information and not yours as this can create record keeping issues for your counsellor contact information in our system.

Submit the required documents

Documents required for admission can vary by province, country or curriculum. Check the admission requirements section to find the documents your student will need to submit when applying to Memorial.

Where official transcripts are required, original documents must be sent directly from the originating school or issuing institution. Where this is not possible, we will accept notarized copies of the originals.

Track their progress

Once a student hits "submit," they aren't left in the dark. They can log back into their Admissions Portal anytime to check the status of their application, see if documents are missing, and view their admission decision.

Living on campus: Student housing

Living in student housing is more than just a place to sleep—it’s where students can find their community. There is a separate online application for student housing - to apply students must be accepted to the University. Learn more about student housing depending on their campus of interest:
