City of St. John's

City of St. John's

St. John’s is the easternmost city in Canada, and the provincial capital of Newfoundland and Labrador. Founded more than 400 years ago, today it is a cosmopolitan and safe city known for its storied history and vibrant culture.

Don't be put off by what you hear about Newfoundland weather! Sure, it can be windy, rainy or foggy in St. John's on any given day—but that can change quickly to blue skies and sunshine by lunchtime.

We have what's known as a temperate climate, which saves us from the extreme temperature differences you see in many other parts of Canada. During the summer months, the temperature can go from cool to warm with an average of 20 degrees Celsius in July. Winters here are generally mild with an average temperature of 0 degrees Celsius. On average, the annual rainfall is 1190 millimetres and annual snowfall is 322 centimetres.

St. John's has shopping centres and districts to suit every taste. Downtown St. John's features the finest shopping available with specialty shops, boutiques and galleries. Find local craft and food vendors at the St. John's Farmers' Market; and with over 140 stores and services, the Avalon Mall is just a short walk or bus ride away from campus.

Looking for world cuisine? You can find sushi, ramen, Indian, Korean, Mexican, Middle Eastern, and countless other international cuisines in restaurants around town. From the Afghan Restaurant to Zapata's, there's something for every taste. And of course, you'll never have to look far for a feed of fish and chips.

Within St. John’s you'll find parks, both large and small, and a series of walking and hiking trails that snake throughout the city and beyond.

There's a sense of awe that comes over you when you stand on our coast. You're standing at the edge of North America. Now take a deep breath. Have you ever experienced fresh air like this? Rough. Rugged. Untamed. And completely natural.

Arts & Culture

St. John's is filled with cultural diversity and many unique experiences that make life in this city like no other.

Perched high above the city’s downtown, The Rooms are home to Newfoundland and Labrador’s provincial gallery, museum and archives—perfect for a foggy day retreat.

Take your pick of live comedy or drama at theatres such as the Arts and Culture Centre or LSPU Hall. Looking for the latest blockbuster? Check out the Cineplex Cinemas at Avalon Mall. On Thursday evenings, during the fall and winter semesters, you'll also find the MUN Cinema Series here as well.
