Global Affairs Canada Sanctions Bureau Outreach team presentation and discussion session on Canada’s sanctions regime
The Global Affairs Canada Sanctions Bureau Outreach team will be offering a hybrid presentation and discussion session on Canada’s sanctions regime.
The session will take place on Monday, May 5, from 10-11:30 a.m. in-person in the Core Science Facility, room CSF-1302, Memorial University, St. John’s campus.
As you may know, Canada's use of sanctions has increased in recent years, in particular following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Global Affairs Canada (GAC) is leading outreach efforts to ensure Canadians understand how sanctions may apply to their activities or their work. The team offers a presentation entitled "Sanctions 101" that will provide an overview of Canada's sanctions toolkit, current sanctions measures, best practices on how to conduct due diligence to verify sanctions, and information on how to apply for a permit, if one is required.
The presentation to the stakeholder’s sector to better explain the nuances and challenges they are likely to encounter when performing their due diligence to comply with sanctions regulations. Discussion and questions are encouraged throughout the session.
For universities, the most important risk vectors from sanctions to consider are:
- Research security
- Financing or the exchange of funds
- Recruitment of foreign staff or students
- Information exchange with individuals in or from a sanctioned country
- Staff or student travel to a sanctioned country or peripheral region
You are invited to visit the Canada’s Sanctions website if you wish to familiarize yourself with Canada’s sanctions regime prior to the session.
Please also consider submitting any industry or stakeholder related questions you have in advance so organizers can prepare more fulsome answers as required. Questions can be sent to laura.lapointe@international.gc.ca.
Thank you for your interest in this session.
