Statement on the Tumbler Ridge Tragedy

Feb 13th, 2026

From the Dean of Education:

The Faculty of Education at Memorial University sends its condolences to the students, educators, families, and community members of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, following the tragic events of February 10th, 2026.

Despite the physical distance between our provinces, we know Newfoundland and Labrador educators and those preparing to enter the profession will see their own communities and classrooms reflected in Tumbler Ridge. It is natural to have feelings of grief, anger, fear, uncertainty, or helplessness in the wake of such a traumatic event. Please show yourself compassion and know that you are not alone in feeling this way.

If you’re struggling with processing your feelings, we encourage you to access professional support through MUN, the NLTA, community organizations, or the provincial government. Please see the list of mental health and counselling resources below.

We also understand that teachers are not the only ones grappling with this event. The following days will include difficult feelings and conversations in classrooms across the country. If you need guidance on how to best support your students, please see this resource from the Canadian Teacher’s Federation: https://www.ctf-fce.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Trauma-Informed-Teaching-Learning-EN.pdf

Tumbler Ridge will continue to be in our hearts in the difficult days ahead and educators will play an important role in healing from this tragedy. Together, we can meet challenges with compassion and care.

In solidarity,

Dr. Pamela Osmond-Johnson
Dean, Faculty of Education
Memorial University
