Winning ideas: Genesis Centre hosts student entrepreneur competition

One minute.

That’s how long students from both Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic will have to impress seasoned entrepreneurs, potential investors and mentors with their business plans.

The Genesis Centre, Memorial’s business incubator for technology-based ventures with high-growth potential, is hosting Pitch101, an event that gives student entrepreneurs 60 seconds to convey their big idea.

Bob Williamson, Pitch101 founder, facilitator and mentor will be in attendance.

“Pitching your idea concisely and effectively is a skill that needs a lot of fine tuning,” said Greg Hood, chief executive officer, Genesis Centre. “The Pitch101 program has had great success in refining that skill, having coached over 350 participants in more than 10 post-secondary institutions.

“It’s a great learning opportunity for students to learn from industry experts, boost their confidence in delivering a solid pitch, while at the same time getting them great exposure to the local entrepreneurial ecosystem. We at the Genesis Centre have had a great interest in fostering young entrepreneurs in Newfoundland and Labrador. It’s a mission that Pitch101 shares with us and we’re excited to host the next one here at Memorial.”

Cash up for grabs
After a Q&A with judges, the audience will then decide the winner with a vote and there is cash for the best ideas. The top vote getter receives $500; second place receives $300; and third place receives $200.

The Genesis Centre is encouraging the university community to come out and participate in the event. In order to attend, you must RSVP online.

Pitch101 takes place Friday, Feb. 19, from 10 a.m. until noon in the EN-4000 in the Engineering building on the St. John’s campus.

A light reception will follow the presentations.
