Respectful Workplace

Memorial University is committed to supporting a climate of respect in the workplace where individuals or groups of individuals are free from harassment and discrimination, and seeks to promote awareness and create an understanding of what is considered harassment.

There is no place for racism or intolerance at Memorial. The university does not accept racism of any sort on our campus and condemns all types of prejudice and bigotry in any form it takes.

The Respectful Workplace policy outlines the methods for addressing issues of harassment that fall under the policy, which includes the informal early resolution of concerns and the formal complaint process.

Inclusiveness in the Workplace

Memorial is committed to maintaining an environment of understanding and respect for the dignity and worth of each person in support of inclusiveness in its workplace programs and practices. The duty to accommodate is an ethical and legal responsibility. The Workplace Accommodation policy sets forward the guiding principles of accommodation and establishes a framework for the process.

Memorial is fortunate to be one of the most diverse institutions within Newfoundland and Labrador and this diversity is one of our greatest strengths. The university seeks to build an environment where all employees are supported, valued and equal.

Workplace Violence Prevention

Mandatory Workplace Violence Prevention training is required for all Memorial University employees (both administrative and academic). The objective of this training program is to create a greater awareness of the changes to the Newfoundland and Labrador Occupational Health and Safety Regulations that came into effect in January 2020 with respect to workplace violence.

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations include provisions on worker-on-worker violence, family violence in the workplace, development and implementation of a harassment plan and risk assessment.

Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault

The university recognizes its ethical and legal responsibility to provide a work, learning and living environment that is free of all forms of sexual harassment, including sexual assault. Students, faculty, and staff have the right to an environment that is free from sexual harassment and sexual assault as outlined in the Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault policy.

The Sexual Harassment Office provides confidential services to all members of the university community on all campuses and institutes of Memorial. The Sexual Harassment Office works to:

  • Prevent sexual harassment and sexual assault through education;
  • Mitigate the effects of sexual harassment and sexual assault; and
  • Identify methods for timely resolutions of complaints of sexual harassment and sexual assault which may arise at Memorial University.
