The Tom Daniels Application Assistance Prize

Established by Dr. Thomas Daniels, retired professor in the Psychology program at Grenfell Campus, this annually funded prize will provide support for students' applications to graduate or professional schools. It will be awarded to a fourth year student majoring in psychology at Grenfell Campus with a minimum 75% average in all psychology courses. Candidates will submit a letter of application to the Chair of the Psychology program with a detailed description of the programs to which they are applying, rationale for choosing these programs, and the costs associated with each application. The prize will be administered by the Chair, psychology program, at Grenfell Campus. Deadline for the submission of applications is October 2nd, 2023 at 11:59 pm.

The Duncan A. Ferguson Prize in Psychology

This prize was established by family, friends and colleagues in memory of Dr. Duncan A. Ferguson. It will be awarded annually to a student in their final year of a Psychology program at Grenfell Campus. The chosen student will have demonstrated strong academic performance and have contributed to the spirit of student life within the Psychology program. This prize, valued at $500, will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Chair, Psychology program, Grenfell Campus, in consultation with the Psychology faculty and the Ferguson family. Deadline for the submission of applications is November 17th, 2023 at 11:59 pm.

The Alan and Patricia Wright Psychology Conference Travel Bursary

This award was established by Dr. Sandra Wright in memory of her parents, Alan and Patricia Wright, both former educators who believed strongly in the importance of education. It will be given annually to a fourth-year psychology major engaged in full-time studies at Grenfell Campus. The purpose of the award is to offset the cost of travel to a psychology conference (e.g., APICS, CPA, or CCBBCS). Funds must be used for travel to a conference in the year it is awarded. This bursary is valued at $700. Deadline for the submission of applications is January 31st, 2024.

University Medal for Academic Excellence in Psychology

The University Medal for Academic Excellence in Psychology is given in the graduating year to a candidate for a Bachelor degree, majoring in psychology, who is recommended by the Chair of the Psychology Program at Grenfell based on outstanding academic performance. The medal is awarded at the Spring Convocation each year.

Daniel J. Stewart Prize in Psychology

This prize was established by the family and friends of Dr. Daniel J. Stewart. Dr. Stewart (1947-2016) was a member of Grenfell Campus’ psychology program (department) from 1975 until his retirement in 2005 and was an architect of the program that exists today. He obtained Bachelor and Masters of Arts degrees from Memorial University (1969; 1972), a PhD from Miami University (Oxford, OH, 1975), and in keeping with his belief that learning as much as you could about your world was the most important quest, Dan obtained a Masters of Philosophy from Memorial University in 2015. With his nose always in a book, he constantly consumed information that would see him one day reading research articles related to quantum mechanics while the next would see him lost in the pages of a spy or fantasy novel (his guilty pleasures). All of this gathered information aided his determination to broadly educate and challenge those learning from him. He believed that respectful discussion and argument furthered knowledge and perspective and that opinions were fine providing you had evidence to support them. These beliefs and others were inspirational to many, students and colleagues alike. Referred to by his family as the “original Google”, Dan had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and it is the donors’ hope that this prize will help a deserving undergraduate to follow their own quest to understanding. Valued at $500, the prize will be awarded annually to an undergraduate student beyond their second year of study in the Psychology program, Grenfell Campus, at Memorial University of Newfoundland. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a prize as defined by the University and write an essay on a topic to be determined each year by the Psychology program at Grenfell Campus. Students can contact the Psychology program for an application which will include the topic of the essay. The prize will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Chair, Psychology program, Grenfell Campus. Deadline for the submission of applications is October 20th, 2023 at 11:59 pm. You are asked to write an essay addressing the following question:

Psychology is a diverse discipline, both as a field of study (e.g., it has many subdisciplines) and in the multiple theories used to explain a given topic. In your opinion, explain any advantage(s) and/or disadvantage(s) associated with the diversity in psychology. Your essay should not exceed 500 words.
