Teaching

The Department of Chemistry is committed to providing excellent instruction at the undergraduate and graduate level. Two help centres are staffed to provide students with immediate one-on-one assistance with course material. Our first year chemistry classes make use of innovative methods like personal response devices and online assignments. These innovative methods are used through our program. For example, computational modelling is integrated into the 3rd year physical chemistry laboratory.

Laboratory Instruction

Hands-on laboratory experience is essential for providing students with a complete understanding of chemical topics and for training to perform chemical research. Our laboratory instruction is provided by a dedicated team of laboratory demonstrators and teaching assistants. Modernization of our undergraduate laboratories is an ongoing project. Our labs are equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation to provide student with hands-on experience with the type of instrument that is used in modern chemistry research and industry. Recent successes include the purchase of a bench-top NMR and EPR to improve the training of students in spectroscopy.

Experiential Learning

Hands-on experience performing research in an experimental laboratory is an invaluable component in undergraduate education. Our department employs many undergraduate students in the laboratory through the MUCEP, SURA, and NSERC USRA programs. These opportunities are described on our Undergraduate page.
