Adult Basic Education
Memorial University welcomes applicants who have completed Adult Basic Education (ABE) in lieu of a high school diploma. To be considered for general admission, applicants must have completed the Level III ABE Diploma (36 credits) with an overall average of at least 70% in the following courses:
- English 3101A, 3101B and 3101C
- Mathematics 3101A, 3101B, and 3101C
- One of the following Science combinations:
- Biology 3101A, 3101B, and 3101C
- Chemistry 3102A, 3102B, and 3102C
- Physics 3104A, 3104B, and 3104C
Applicants who have already completed a high school diploma but who do not meet general admission requirements may take acceptable ABE courses to meet the requirements without completing the full Level III ABE Diploma. For advice on selecting appropriate ABE courses for upgrading to meet general admission requirements, please contact admissions@mun.ca.
For more information on ABE providers, please refer to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador website. General Educational Development (GED) and Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) are not acceptable for admission.

If you are currently enrolled in ABE
When you apply (early acceptance)
- Interim (unofficial) ABE transcript showing current course registrations should be uploaded to the admissions portal along with your application or e-mailed as soon as it is available.
- Final official high school transcript (if applicable). This should be mailed or e-mailed directly from the school or responsible department of education.
- Supplementary information required for competitive-entry programs may be required with your application.
When you finish ABE (verified acceptance)
- Final official ABE transcript (mailed or e-mailed directly from the ABE provider).
If you have completed ABE and not attended a post-secondary institution
- Final official ABE transcript (mailed or e-mailed directly from the ABE provider or responsible department of education).
- Final official high school transcript (if applicable). This should be mailed or e-mailed directly from the school or responsible department of education.
- Supplementary information required for competitive-entry programs may be required with your application.
If you have attended a post-secondary institution
- You are required to apply as a transfer student. In addition to the information provided above, please refer to our university or college transfer applicant requirements.
English language proficiency
If you have not attended an English medium ABE provider and/or high school in Canada for a total of at least three years of full-time study, you may be required to provide further proof of English language proficiency.
Submitting your documents
Applicants are encouraged to submit all available official documents before their assigned registration time to assist with course registration and the verified acceptance decision.
All required official documents must be submitted by the document deadline. Official documents must be received by mail directly from the issuing school/institution in a sealed envelope, unless the issuing school/institution has been pre-authorized for e-mail submission.
