NLCAHR has a new director

The Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research (NLCAHR) has a new director. Dr. Rick Audas, professor of health statistics and economics in the Division of Community Health and Humanities in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University, has been appointed as NLCAHR’s interim director. Dr. Audas’ appointment follows the retirement of Dr. Stephen Bornstein from this role.

NLCAHR team publishes a profile of the NL health system

We are pleased to announce the publication of new book about the Newfoundland and Labrador health system, released this month from the University of Toronto Press. Part of a series on Canada’s provincial and territorial health systems, this publication provides a critical analysis of how the healthcare system has been developed and managed in Canada’s youngest province.

Congratulations to Christie Warren, Research Officer with NLCAHR's Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program, on the publication of her academic research in Psychiatric Quarterly.  The research project suggests that different types of social support may serve as protective factors for psychological distress among females and males with Bipolar Disorder.

NLCAHR to host 2020 David Hawkins Lecture

NLCAHR has invited Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw, a world leader in implementation research and knowledge translation, to present the 2020 David Hawkins Lecture at Memorial.  Dr. Grimshaw will discuss his innovative work on ways to increase the use of evidence-based research by healthcare professionals and healthcare systems to improve quality of care for all. His public lecture "Show me the Evicence" will take place on January 15th at 4pm in the Dr. Richard Fagan Lecture Theatre 1M101.

Research on Aging receives new funding

The funding of seven provincial projects is helping to advance several areas of aging research. The Aging Research Centre – Newfoundland and Labrador (ARC-NL), Memorial University's new research centre for the study of aging held its first call for proposals in Spring 2019 and is awarding more than $68,000 in research dollars, providing funding to seven different Memorial University principal investigators.

CHRSP publishes study on preschool screening

The Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program of the NL Centre for Applied Health Research has just published its 32nd report,LINK TO THE REPORT written by Aimee Letto, CHRSP Research Officer, and Dr. Stephen Bornstein, CHRSP Program Director.  The report examines the scientific evidence about what health and developmental concerns for which the preschool population of Newfoundland and Labrador should be screened.

CHRSP featured in national casebook series

Putting research in place: An innovative approach to decision support in Newfoundland and Labrador A new article in the National Collaborating Centre for Methods and Tools EIDM Casebook features the Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program (CHRSP) and discusses how this innovative provincial program supports evidence-informed decision making by prioritizing research, synthesizing complex evidence, attuning findings to local resources/capacities, and producing rapid, easy-to-use reports.

Lifelong perseverance

Wendy Lasisi, a PhD student in Clinical Epidemiology, and recipient of a Rotary Foundation Global Grant scholarship, works with NLCAHR as a Research Assistant for the Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program. The story of how Wendy followed her calling from Nigeria to Newofundland was featured in an article by Rebecca Rebeiro in the Memorial University Gazette on September 12, 2018. 

Remembering Carol Brice-Bennett

The Director and staff of NLCAHR were saddened to learn of that Carol Brice-Bennett , our former CHRSP Champion for Labrador-Grenfell Health and a member of our Research Exchange Group on Rural, Northern, and Aboriginal Health, passed away in August, 2018.  Our sincere condolences to Carol's family and friends.  She will be missed.

CHRSP publishes two new studies

Researchers at the Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program of NLCAHR have published two new decision-support products on topics identified as priorities by our provincial health system partners.  The first, a Rapid Evidence Report,  provides an overview of evidence on palliative care approaches for people with chronic disease.  Findings from thnis study were disseminated at a meeting with provincial health system stakeholders on April 25, 2018.  The second study was a Snapshot Report that provided a jurisdictional scan of psychiatrist-led rural and remote mental health and addictions programs that have been implemented elsewhere in Canada.  This report was requested by our health system partners to help inform the action plan laid out in the All-Party Committee on Mental Health's report: Towards Recovery: A Vision for a Renewed Mental Health and Addictions System for Newfoundland and Labrador.

New CHRSP Report Looks at Palliative Approach to Chronic Disease

On April 25, 2018, NLCAHR's Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program will host a public dissemination event for READ THE FULL REPORT HEREhat looks at a palliative approach to care for people with chronic disease, a topic identified as a priority by our provincial health system partners. A great deal of research exchange will be happening this month, facilitated by the Newfoundland & Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research. With topics ranging across numerous focus areas, diverse groups of professionals and community members will have a chance to attend presentations and participate in Research Exchange Groups to discuss applied health research.

New journal publication tells the CHRSP story

How does an innovative research program support policy and practice decisions in this province’s health system?   Find out in the November 2017 issue of Systematic Reviews, an open access, peer-reviewed journal of BioMed Central, that features an article on the Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program (CHRSP),  NLCAHR’s flagship program  for health system decision support.  

 

CADTH supports NL approach to dialysis

The Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) has just released a new report on dialysis modalities for end-stage renal disease.  Their latest findings validate a report published by CHRSP in 2008 and updated again in 2013 and support approaches to home dialysis that are used in this province.

On Tuesday May 16, 2017, Discovery Day is again being hosted by the Faculty of Medicine. Offered at thirteen sites across Canada, Discovery Day in Health Sciences is one of many ways the university encourages young people to explore the exciting career options available to them in the health sciences. The event organizers are now looking for passionate and enthusiastic presenters to help ignite a spark in young people who are in the process of discerning their academic and professional goals.  More than 100 students, selected from secondary schools in St. John’s and surrounding areas, will use this forum to explore their options in the health sciences.

The Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program of NLCAHR has recently completed two new Rapid Evidence Reports on topics chosen by our provincial health system partners to support evidence-informed decision making in Newfoundland and Labrador. One study deals with reducing wait times for outpatient services while the other is about using digital surveys to soklicit patient feedback.

Research Funding Promotes Healthy Aging

Seven research projects have been awarded a total of $87,500 through the Newfoundland and Labrador Healthy Aging Research Program (NL-HARP), funded by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.  This opportunity, administered by the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research, supports research that aligns with the Provincial Healthy Aging Framework.   We congratulate this year’s winners.

New CHRSP Study on Preventing Type 2 Diabetes

Health system decision makers in NL recognize the burden that Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) places on both the individual and on the healthcare system.  By focusing on prevention, they hope to improve population health in the province and to reduce the costs required to manage this chronic disease. In an effort to help decision makers develop prevention strategies based on reliable evidence, the Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program (CHRSP) identified and reviewed the best available scientific and economic evidence on the clinical and cost effectiveness of approaches that aim to reduce T2D incidence.

Dr. Cara Tannenbaum visits Memorial

DR. CARA TANNENBAUM will visit NLCAHR on May 5th to give a public lecture.  She is Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Gender and Health and Professor in the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy at the Université de Montréal with long-standing interest and leadership in the field of gender and health.  Dr. Tannenbaum conducted the first-ever pan-Canadian study on older women's and men's unmet health priorities, and led Health Canada's Health Policy Research Program on the development of gender-sensitive mental health indicators.

Funded! 5 New Research Projects

The Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Eastern Health have funded five research projects under the final competition for research funding following from the Cameron Inquiry.  The fund, Enhancing Health Care in NL, administered by NLCAHR, was established to support increased research and evaluation activities aimed at improving healthcare for patients in this province, including those with cancer.

In response to overwhelming interest in the ongoing Patient-Oriented Research Grants Competition, the Newfoundland and Labrador SUpport for Patient-Oriented Research and Trials Unit (NL SUPPORT) is pleased to extend the deadline for applications from December 15th until January 31st, 2016 to offer interested researchers the extra time to get their applications in order.

Congratulations to the Winners!

Seven research projects have been awarded a total of $122,000 under the 2015 Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research (NLCAHR) Awards Program. NLCAHR funds research that aligns with the Centre’s mandate: to meet the challenges of population health and health services in Newfoundland and Labrador; to address health promotion and wellness; and to promote the efficiency and effectiveness of the provincial health system.  Thirty applicants submitted proposals to this year’s program.  They included Master’s students, Doctoral candidates, and faculty researchers from a range of disciplines who are either developing or proposing applied health research projects.  We extend our sincere thanks to all who applied and to the peer reviewers who assessed their applications.

NLCAHR Releases Annual Report

It's all about engagement. Researchers, community stakeholders, and health system partners work with NLCAHR every day to tackle the challenges of our health system head-on.  

This year’s annual report "The Story of the Year" provides ample evidence of the ways in which this work is being done.  In reflecting on the stories of the past year, engagement certainly emerged as the dominant theme.  Every day, the Centre is fully engaged with its partners in health research collaboration, whether by consulting on research projects under the Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program (CHRSP), building bridges to connect community stakeholders and research partners through our Research Exchange Groups, or helping applied health researchers to access funding from a variety of sources, including the awards programs we administer.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has awarded a total of $108,980 to seven research projects through the 2015 Newfoundland and Labrador Healthy Aging Research Program (NL-HARP), a funding opportunity administered by the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research to support research that aligns with the Provincial Healthy Aging Framework.  Since its inception in 2008, NL-HARP has provided close to $1.1 million in support of research into healthy aging.

Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Eastern Health are pleased to announce the fourth competition for research funding following from the Cameron Inquiry. The fund, Enhancing Health Care in NL, will be administered by the NL Centre for Applied Health Research. The program aims to increase the scope and scale of research and evaluation activities designed to improve healthcare for patients in this province, including those with cancer.

NLCAHR Director on a Pending Asbestos Health Crisis

In an article contributed to the Globe and Mail on June 19 2014, Dr. Stephen Bornstein, Director of NLCAHR discusses his grave concerns about the dangers of asbestos and the outcomes of his research at Memorial University, designing, developing, and implementing an occupational exposure and disease registry for former employees of the asbestos mine in Baie Verte, Newfoundland.

Building Health into a Downtown Green Space

NLCAHR continues to support the Building Healthy Communities Collaborative by assisting with a Health Impact Assessment for the re-design of a green space in the Georgetown neighbourhood of downtown St. John's.  In an effort to keep health and wellness on the agenda for planners redesigning the area known as Century Park, Pablo Navarro, Senior Research Officer at NLCAHR, hosted a public forum on Saturday May 10, 2014 in which neighbourhood residents provided feedback and ideas for the planned re-design.

The Impact of Relocation on Adults with Mild to Moderate Dementia

A Newfoundland & Labrador study has recently found that a model of care that promotes purposeful activities and social interactions may have a positive impact on overall function of individuals with mild to moderate dementia. The Journal of the Canadian Gerontological Nursing Association, Perspectives, published a feature article in its April 2014 issue on the impact of relocation from home or institution to assisted living on adults with mild to moderate dementia.  The article features results of a quantitative study of the impacts of relocation to a new model of care known as the Protective Community Residences, implemented in Western Health in 2008, and was written by Newfoundland and Labrador researchers Kelli O’Brien (Western Health), Judith Wells (Western Regional School of Nursing), Darlene Welsh, (Western Health), Carla Wells (Western Regional School of Nursing), and Leslie Cake Memorial University (Grenfell Campus).

Sex-positive health strategies for gay men

Mikiki, gay men’s health activist, street outreach worker and Newfoundland's own video artist, performance artist and drag queen, will be visiting St. John’s for a Memorial University-sponsored talk about gay men’s sexual health at Eastern Edge Gallery on May 6 from 7 to 9pm. His interactive public forum, Strategic Positioning, covers HIV stigma, HIV prevention and new landmark studies linking community-wide treatment to community-wide prevention.

Funding Research on Aging: NL-HARP Winners Announced

Five researchers investigating issues of relevance to our aging population have been awarded funding under the Newfoundland and Labrador Healthy Aging Research Program (NL-HARP). The program, funded by the province’s Department of Health and Community Services, is administered by NLCAHR to support local research aligned with the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework.

Diet and Seniors: NL-HARP Researchers Publish

Findings from a preliminary investigation into diet inadequacy among seniors in Newfoundland and Labrador, a study supported by a research grant from the NL-Healthy Aging Research Program, (administered through NLCAHR), have been published by researcher Jing Yan and professor of Epidemiology, Dr. Peter Wang, with co-authors Barbara Roebothan, Ann Ryan, Zhi Chen, and Yanqing Yi in the journal BMC Public Health.

Building Healthy Communities On the Rock

Senior CHRSP Research Officer, Pablo Navarro, will present at this year's CDPAC (Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance of Canada) conference on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in Ottawa. Pablo will talk about his involvement with the Building Healthy Communities Collaborative, an initiative that has been strongly supported by NLCAHR since its inception in 2011. The collaborative aims to bring health and wellness to the community planning table in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Research Exchange topics for March: Mental Health Stigma, Cyber Bullies

March is shaping up to be a great month for Research Exchange at NLCAHR, with two very interesting topics under discssion.  On March 20th, our group on Mental Health hosts "Two Sides of a Coin: Patient and Research Perspectives on Mental Health Stigma".  March 24th will feature a presentation on Cyber Bullying by the convener of our Research Exchange group on Mental Health.

HIV and Aging Workshop at NLCAHR

The AIDS Committee of Newfoundland & Labrador (ACNL) Working Group on Aging (HIV/LGBT) and the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange (CATIE) invites the general public and the Research Exchange Group on Aging to join us for a workshop to be held at the NLCAHR Boardroom on February 26th at 3:00pm.   There is no cost for this workshop.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research (NLCAHR) invites you to a special meeting of our Research Exchange Group on Autism taking place from 12:30pm to 2:00pm on February 26th at our boardroom.  Dr. Rick Audas will describe a multi-disciplinary, inter-provincial research project that has been funded by CIHR and is being led by Memorial University.

NLCAHR-funded researcher published in British Journal of Cancer

A paper by an NLCAHR-funded researcher, Yun Zhu on “Influence of pre-diagnostic cigarette smoking on colorectal cancer survivial: overall and by tumour molecular phenotype” has been published in the most recent issue of British Journal of Cancer. 


We congratulate Yun and the entire team.   In this study, the team was able to integrate information from various sources: epidemiological survey, clinical data, and genetic data. As a graduate student, Yun's research was supported by a Master's Fellowship from NLCAHR and by the Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute (BHCRI). 

 

Health Innovation Webcast Now Available

A webcast of Dr. Anne Snowdon's December 2013 Research Talks public lecture on Health System Innovation is now available on the NLCAHR website

Dr. Snowdon, academic chair of the International Centre for Health Innovation at the Richard Ivey School of Business, leads the Centre’s work to drive health system sustainability and productivity.  She visited St. John's last month for a public talk about what Canadians value in the healthcare system and whether the system is delivering that value.

 

New Deadline for CDPAC 2014 Conference Abstracts

The CDPAC Pan-Canadian Conference "New Partnerships and New Approaches for Chronic Disease Prevention"  will be held at the Delta Ottawa City Centre from April 8-11, 2014.  They have extended the deadline for their oral presentations and rapid fire poster sessions for students to January 15, 2014.

New CHRSP Study on Community-Based Service Models for Seniors

The Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program of the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research (NLCAHR) recently completed a study that looked at integrated primary healthcare and social-care models that support seniors who wish to age in place.  Recognizing that knowledge translation is central to the effectiveness of applied health research, NLCAHR is hosting a dissemination event to discuss the results of this study on January 22 2014 at 2:00pm.
