Barriers and Facilitators to Services for Children with ASD
The Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research (NLCAHR) invites you to a special meeting of our Details taking place from 12:30pm to 2:00pm on February 26th at our boardroom. Dr. Rick Audas will describe a multi-disciplinary, inter-provincial research project that has been funded by CIHR and is being led by Memorial University. The Centre for Disease Control estimates of the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) suggest that approximately one in 88 children are on the spectrum, making it among the most prevalent of mental health conditions among children and youth. Treatment pathways (or journeys) vary considerably within and across provinces and there is mixed evidence of best practice. Dr. Audas’s program of research aims to document the experiences of children with ASD and their families across all four Atlantic Provinces and to identify promising treatment programs elsewhere.
About the Presenter: Dr. Rick Audas is an Associate Professor of Health Economics, Department of Community Health and Humanities in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University who teaches Health Economics, Research Methods and Health Technology Assessment. He is particularly interested in the medical device industry, employment issues among health professionals and diagnostic imaging. More generally, he is interested in measuring health outcomes and health service utilization and understanding how health care expenditures can be more efficiently utilized to improve population health. Previously, Dr. Audas has held appointments at Bangor University (UK), Manchester University (UK), University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (UK), University of New Brunswick and Otago University (NZ).
