New CHRSP Report Looks at Palliative Approach to Chronic Disease

CHRONIC DISEASE AND PALLIATIVE CARE DISSEMINATION EVENT

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25, 018 | 2:00PM-3:00PM NST

NLCAHR Boardroom, 95 Bonaventure Avenue, Suite 300

Presenter: Sarah Mackey

Health system partners in Newfoundland and Labrador are concerned about the significant impact of chronic disease on population health in this province and about the effect of chronic disease on health system sustainability. Newfoundland and Labrador’s demographic and geographic characteristics make the province particularly susceptible to the burdens associated with chronic disease, with over half of NL residents aged 12 years and older having at least one chronic disease. Following from a topic submitted by Central Health, our six health system stakeholders asked the Contextualized Health Research Synthesis Program to review the evidence on how to integrate a palliative approach to care before end‐of‐life for those with serious chronic disease. Having reviewed the evidence and consulted with provincial healthcare stakeholders, our research addressed the following question: “What does the scientific literature tell us about ways of integrating a palliative approach to care at an early stage for patients with serious or advanced chronic disease and the effectiveness of doing so?”

The report authors for this study were Sarah Mackey and Dr. Stephen Bornstein of NLCAHR, in consultation with Dr. Barbara Pesut, University of British Columbia, Canada Research Chair in Health, Ethics, and Diversity.
