Switching from Pop to IMAP in Mail on OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) and above.

The following documentation is used to help users to migrate from the POP service to IMAP for users of OS X 10.4.x and above. The process is as follows:

Step 1. Back up your current POP email account. To do this, you will have to create a mailbox on your Mac?s local hard drive. Click the Mailbox menu, and choose New Mailbox?

Step 2. To ensure the location of the new mailbox is on the hard drive of your Mac, make sure it says ?On My Mac.? You may name the new mailbox whatever you like, in this example, we have chosen ?Old Mail?.

Step 3. Now transfer all mail from your inbox to your new local mailbox. Making sure you have your current inbox open, select all of the messages by clicking the Edit menu and choose Select all.

Step 4. Once selected, drag all of the email messages from your inbox to your local mailbox.

Step 5. Once you have verified that your new local mailbox contains the messages in your In Box, repeat steps 1 through 4 for your Sent mail as well. Once your In box and Sent mail have been backed up, you will remove your old POP account. Click the Mail menu and choose Preferences.

Step 6. Once the Preferences screen is open, remove the current POP account. To remove this, highlight your POP account and click on the minus sign (-) at the bottom. If you hover your mouse over the minus sign, Remove an account will appear.

It will prompt you for confirmation. Click OK.

Step 7. To add your new IMAP account, click on the plus sign (+). Again, if you hover over this, the words Create an account will appear.

Step 8. The General Information screen will appear. Here, Click Account Type and select IMAP.

Step 9. Once IMAP is selected, type your full name in the full name field, and your email address in the email address field and click continue.

Step 10. For the Incoming Mail Server, type; mail.mun.ca. It is not case sensitive. The username is the prefix of your @mun.ca email address. Type your current password, and click continue.

Step 11. The Outgoing Mail server is smtp.mun.ca. It is not case sensitive. Use authentication should be left unchecked. Click continue. Please note: if you are using an internet service provider other than MUN, then you will need to ask your Internet Service Provider for the proper SMTP settings for your e-mail.

Step 12. You will then be presented with your account summary. The setup of your IMAP email account is now complete. Click continue.

Step 13. Close the preference window, and you?ll see that your IMAP account has been added with all of your folders downloaded.
